Problem locating and removing AVG Resident Shield Notification...

Apr 23, 2004 5:51PM PDT

I am running AVG 6.0 free edition. A while back I somehow inherited the Lovsan.A virus while trying out AOL. In fact I recd.6 viruses in all but AVG found and removed all of them except Lovsan. Lovsan was the first one I encountered and I accidentally restored it out of my AVG vault. I ran Bitdender and successfully removed it. All other viruses were held in the vault and safely deleted. Now, the problem is that when my PC is on but idle, the Lovsan.A notification pops up when Resident Shield runs. It says to run AVG to remove it but it does not find it. I ran Bitdefender several times as well and it says that my system is clear. I know now that my PC is clear for sure. My question: How or where can I find and locate this text log or file so I can stop this pesky notification????? I have the identifier information for this virus text and it shows the location as C:\ System Volume Information\_restore etc...But when I run a search it says the File is invalid...HELP!!!

Revans, This Should Help

First, you need to temporarily disable System Restore. Since I don't see that you told us your operating system, please use the appropriate intructions below to do that:

To disable Windows XP System Restore:

1. Click Start.
2. Right-click on the ?My Computer? icon, and then click Properties.
3. Click the "System Restore" tab.
4. Check "Turn off system restore" or "Turn off system restore on all drives". Click on Apply, etc.

To disable Windows Me System Restore:

1. Click Start, point to ?Settings?, and then click ?Control Panel?.
2. Double-click the ?System? icon. The System Properties dialog box appears.

NOTE: If the System icon is not visible, click "View all Control Panel options" to display it.

3. Click the ?Performance? tab, and then click ?File System?.
4. Click the ?Troubleshooting? tab, and then check ?Disable System Restore?.
____________

Now download the McAfee "Stinger" tool to your desktop from the link below:

McAfee Stinger Tool
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
____________

After that, restart your computer into Safe Mode, using the instructions below, then run the Stinger tool repeatedly till no viruses are detected.

Restart the computer, pressing the F8 key once per second, till it loads a selection screen. Use the up and down arrows to select "Safe Mode", press enter, and the computer will load into a safe mode. It looks like a normal screen but with Safe Mode in each of the four corners. When you?re done, restart the machine and it will boot normally.
________________

When you're done, then you can "re-enable" System Restore by "reversing" the procedures in the instructions above, then restart the computer into "normal" Windows.

Hope this helps.

My OS is XP Home. I meant to include that. But anyways, your tip seems to have done the trick. I have left my computer on but idle most of the day and have not had the notification pop up. I also noticed that the screen saver and energy saving settings are working more consistent. My monitor turns off at the set time. At times it would not turn off at all. Also, the standby feature is working as it should. Thanks!
