problem installing printer: says RPC server unavailable

Dec 29, 2003 5:54AM PST

I'm running windows XP Home version 5.1 with service pack 1 pentium 4 1gb ram hyperthreading computer. Ihad my Lexmark X73 all in one printer installed, was workin alright for awile, then it just stopped working. Uninstalled-reinstalled several times, making sure to do a good uninstall each time. When I do the reinstall it all goes ok till the very end and it comes up with this error message at the end,There was a problem installing this device, An error occurredduring installation of the device, The RPC server is unavailable. I did some searching and did find some info on the same problem saying, that the spoolss.exe and spoolss.dll that are in windows\system32 folder may be missing or corrupt, I checked and I couldn't find the spoolss.exe file there, another site said that file is only on windows NT machines not XP Home edition, I replaced the spoolss.dll file with a another one from an XP machine so that one should be ok, I still get the message though when I reinstall the printer. It has to do with the RPC server I guess, I checked in Services under control panel and the RPC thins are turned on automatic, need help please

Having the same problem

I'm having the same problem. Why can't printer installation be just simple??????

I would like to see a driver for XP, is that so difficult to do? Don't buy Lexmark.

The common causes were in the reply I offered. Spooler not started, etc.
