problem installing pci graphics card to replace intergr

Oct 1, 2004 10:57PM PDT

My system is a Gateway desktop 300 it has a built in graphics controller 82815. I have Windows XP Home 2002 version and service pack 2, Celeron 1300mhz 1.29ghz 256mb sdram. The problem I have is when I put the new Gforce fx 5200 pci card in,even after I disable the old graphics controller it will only display the Gateway boot-up pic and then the windows start-up pic after that it goes black. I have to up grade my daughter bought The Sims2

Disable Intergrated Video in BIOS or Windows?
Must be done in BIOS

Try to boot to safe mode, some cards require
uninstall of previous video drivers.

See

Old info but you need to be aware of what you are getting into.

On boot press the F1 key to enter the set up.
(Because all BIOSs' are different (take your time, absorb what you are looking at) I cannot give step by step instructions)

Look for Intergrated Peripherals ->
disable on board video.

Install video card before booting to windows.

By disabling your on-board video in windows you had no monitor/video. Recovery from this can only be accomplished by installing a video card and disabling the on-board video. Re-installing on-board video in windows. Moot point as you want the new card, just in case this happen to someone else.

Why did Window not switch to the new card....?

As a guess.....
Windows will support up to 9 monitors, I use three, each of these monitors has to be activated in Display Properties from the primary monitor. I think Windows got confused and read your new card as a secondary video source that had not been activated.

I'm sure others will share their views.

I do not understand what happened, my computer start up is going in a loop now that I disabled the old controller in windows and now whatever mode that I choose it just does the same thing. I have not changed the bios and the only thing I see in bios advanced is video config. and it only has two choices pci or agp and it is already set for pci

I found the problem, well not I but my sons friend. The loop was caused by a hard drive problem,I guess from shuting it off with the power cord instead of the proper way (remember to always shutdow with the power button). He had to use chckdisk and boot from my operating system cd to restore corrupt files. After that we just followed billzhillz advice and installed card it works on Sim2 now but I need more sdram it is slow. THANKS billzhillz

Welcome and

Not a large of an issue with xp but watch the compatibly of the memory chips. Same speed and Mnf of orginal chips if possible.

Also if this is the newest SIMs game your processor may not be powerfull enough. From my understanding this game is both memory and CPU intensive. Hopefully someone that knows this game will join in to give a fuller explaination.
