problem in uninstalling norton anti virus

Feb 14, 2004 6:27PM PST

I am unable to uninstall my old norton antivirus programme ( because I want to install the new version 2004 ) ,using the install / uninstall feature of the Add/ Remove programme of the control panel. When I try it , it gives the following report :

" The log file ' C:\Program files \Norton Antivirus\nav95. isu ' is not valid or the data has been corrupted. Uninstallation will not continue."

Can you please help.

thanking you,

M.K. Tolani

If Michael's solution does not work try installing the old program again and then try again. This sometimes works if files are missing or corrupt.

Just a thought!

M.K, Here Are Some Manual Uninstall Instructions
Feb 15, 2004 3:58AM PST

In addition to the other good suggestions, here are the manual uninstall instructions for most of the recent versions of Norton. The instructions include an uninstaller utility(RNAV2003.exe) that can be used when the standard uninstall doesn't get it done.:

How to uninstall Norton AntiVirus 2000/2001/2002/2003

Akok,

Whenever posting questions on these forums, please give us as much information as possible about your computer. Depending on your issue, we might need the operating system, processor speed, amount of RAM installed, brand name of the computer, (if there is one), and any EXACT error messages you are receiving, PLUS, in your case, the exact version of Norton antivirus that you are using. The more information you give us, the better informed our answer will be.

Are you trying to install a free trial of Norton? Or are you trying to uninstall Norton and install another free trial antivirus? If you're trying to install the free trial of Norton, you may need to uninstall your current antivirus program for Norton to install correctly.

If you need to uninstall Norton, please follow the manual uninstall instructions that I provided in my post above. CLICK HERE For That LinkYou should be able to clean Norton completely off the machine by using the NAV removal tools that are mentioned in the links I provided.

Hope this helps.

((I copied an e-mail thatI got from Donna. It worked for me, but I will take no credit if it works for you))

1. Uninstall NIS 2002, remove NAV too. If it asked to restart, do it.

2. Go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, make sure no more entry of Norton Internet Security in the list. (Also, verify that there's no Norton Antivirus in the list). If there's an entry click Remove.

3. Look for LiveReg and Live Update in the list (in Add/REmove Programs) then remove these two.

4. Open My Computer, open C:\, open Programs folder, look for the following folders: Norton Internet Security, Norton Antivirus (if any), Symantec then delete these folders.

5. Empty your recycle bin

6. Go to Start, Search. Click all files and folders, click More advanced options, make sure Search system folders, search hidden files and folders and search subfolders are selected. Then scroll up, type Symantec in All or part of the filename, click Search. Once it's done searching, delete everything that you'll see at the right except if the files is located in your FAvorite links (just read the item and you'll see what I mean)

7. After deleting them (don't close Search window yet) empty recycle bin again. Type LiveUpdate in All or part of the filename and click Search button again. Delete all the items that showed up except if the file is located in your favorite links again. Empty recycle bin again.

8.. Type LiveSubscribe in All or part of the filename, click Search button again - anything it find - delete them. empty recycle bin again.

9. Open Regcleaner (I hope you installed this utility that I suggested to you). Under Software tab>author colum - look for Symantec entries. Put a check on the box for all symantec entries. Remove selected. Exit.

10. From Start, run type REGEDIT click OK. Click Edit, click Find and type Symantec, click Find now. Once it found symantec the entry is highlighted, right click on it and click delete. Click yes to delete it. Press F3 to find again, right-click again to delete the highligthed item. keep on doing this (F3 and rightclick and delete) until you receive a dialog box "Finish searching" NOTE: Be careful in deleting.. make sure that when it highligthed an entry .. read carefully the highlighted entry and make sure the word Symantec is there.

11. Restart your computer and install NIS again Happy) Note: before installing NIS, make sure no other programs is running so that it will not interfere with the installation.

Good Luck!!!
