Problem getting 1920x1080 into PN50A550 via VGA from laptop

Mar 23, 2009 1:20PM PDT

Just bought this plasma HDTV and would like to get a 1920x1080 signal from my laptop (integrated Intel 945GM chipset) into it via VGA cable. The Samsung manual says that the VGA port supports this resolution.

I'm able to display at 1360x768, which looks OK, but would have bought a 720p set if that's what I'd be stuck with. I'd like the higher crisper resolution.

I've updated my drivers and even played with the 'Powerstrip' utility, but can't seem to figure out how to achieve this resolution.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

cmchotmail,

Do you have the latest drivers for your laptop installed?

Drivers are updated

Yes, thanks for your reply. I do have the latest drivers from Intel. My chipset (945GM) offers 1920x1440, so I can't imagine why it wouldn't/couldn't offer 1920x1080, but I can't get it to happen.

BIOS problem?
Mar 24, 2009 11:39AM PDT

I've heard some references (after scouring multiple forums, looking for answers) that sometimes a laptop's BIOS 'blocks' certain resolutions. I have no idea why or how, but if that might be the case, does anyone know how I would check that? I'm fairly savvy with my computers, but no expert...

BIOS problem?

cmchotmail,

In the case of some laptops and monitors (particularly televisions), sometimes the panel's input requires a pin to ground. This tells the panel that an incoming signal is present, and to wake from a "sleep" status. BIOS updates can fix these issues.

As far as resolutions, I have not heard that. Not to say it's not possible, but I've never been asked that before. Google searches didn't turn up much on the subject, so I'm curious now. If I can find something, I'll post it.

Confirming you actually got that to work?
Mar 24, 2009 1:46PM PDT

Thanks Bob.
Are you saying you actually followed these instructions, for this same 945GM chipset, and had success at 1920x1080? If I can get a confirm on that, I'll very willingly wade through all of that headache! Thanks for the response!

Same problem except LN-T5265F
May 10, 2009 8:32AM PDT

I have a HTPC that was working at 1920x1080 with Vista x64 over VGA on a Samsung LN-T5265F. The graphics are Radeon HD 3300. I recently decided to try the Windows 7 RC being that the Media Center is much more flexible and to my liking.

Everything installed properly but now I get an "Unsupported Mode" error over VGA and 1920x1080. If I set the resolution to 1600x1200 it works but then any change to 1920x1080 makes the tv drop image.

Are there any settings on the TV that perhaps I need to adjust? What could be different about Vista 1920x1080 and Windows 7 1920x1080?

tbartolucci,

The difference may be the drivers that are available for that same card. I'm not sure why that might happen to one, and not the other, but that does suggest that the drivers may have something to do with it. As far as the television goes, you might try naming the input PC on the television and see if that might help.

I will definitely keep checking new drivers. But what does naming the connection have to do with anything?

I also did find out this interesting fact. When I have two monitors hooked up to my PC. One over DVI and the other over VGA (LN-T5265F) the VGA works at 1920x1080 perfectly fine. The minute I set the computer to only use the TV the picture goes out.

1920x180 via vga problem
Aug 30, 2009 4:12PM PDT

Hi good day, I'm just wondering if you guys were able to find a solution to this problem? I just hooked up my HTPC to my 32A550 via VGA/D-Sub port but whenever I use 1920x1080 resolution, the tv goes black and displays "Unsupported mode" but I'm definitely sure this TV suppots 1080p resolutions. I'm currently stuck at 1600x1200 and can't go any higher... btw, I'm using a Radeon 4670 if just in case that matters. Thanks in advance. =)
