Question

problem download speed (1 MB/s instead of 10 MB/s !!!)

Mar 24, 2016 6:33PM PDT

Hello,

I installed my new wifi ac router (Asus RT-AC51U) in "router mode" then in "AP mode", but I have the same problem in the two cases : upload speed is good : 10 MB/s (like my fiber connexion), but the download speed is very bad : 1 or 2 MB/s (I should have 10 MB/s).

In fact it starts at 3 or 4 MB/s and quickly goes down to 1 MB/s.

I tested it with several tools (speedtest.net on my smartphone with many test servers and another Android app).

I have no problem with the download speed when wired, ie when I connect my computer on the RT-AC51U in router mode : download et upload speed are normal : 10 MB/s.

Also note that I updated the firmware of the RT-AC51U, I restarted all the devices several times, etc.

Please someone, do you have an idea ?

Answer
Since it's OK wired

I'm suspecting some odd WiFi congestion or compatibility issue. 10MB is 100 megabit so that's above 802.11g's 54megabit. Let's hear about the client's WiFi and if you installed any hotspot shield or such.

Thank you. Here are two screenshots which show the problem :
http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/769739WIFIproblem.png

It's a problem with the new router because with the modem of the ISP (wifi n) I have 3,5 MB/s DL and 3,5 MB/s UP with no problem at all !

10MB is 100 megabit so that's above 802.11g's 54megabit.
Why I you speaking about g wifi and 54megabit ? It's ac here : router is ac and my smartphone is ac.

I should have 10 MB/s DL and 10 MB/s UP because of the ethernet port 10/100 limitation of the wifi router and my internet fiber connexion (100 megabit DL / 100 megabit UP).

Please what do you mean about "client's Wifi" and "hotspot shield" ? I don't know what it means. (english is not my first language).

Thank you.

OK, tell me more about how you configure

To use another router we have to make a few changes. I want to hear what these are in case you missed a step.

Your pictures are OK but the wifi speed test is on some smart phone. I've found those to turn in subpar results.

When sharing tests like this, use the same tool on the same machine.

I let the default settings (although I tried to change many parameters with the Asus page, using the router adress IP in the browser). I just plugged the Asus router in "router mode" and "AP mode", nothing else. As I said the problem is in the two modes, and I have no problem when I use the ISP modem.

What do you want to know exactly ? The Asus administration page (accessed with 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1 or other IP, following the way you use the router) contains tons of parameters.

My smartphone is LG G2 and have no problem for two years now. I use it everyday, it is connected to my ISP modem in wifi at home, and every day I use it and it works flawlessly at 3,5MB/s in UP and DOWN.

But for some reason it works badly in wifi ac with my new Asus Router.

Please tell me exactly what do you want to know and I will write it here gladly.
Thank you.

I may add that I disabled the wifi on the ISP modem to avoid wifi interference between the ISP modem and the Asus Router.

Ok I disabled the 2,4 Ghz wifi on my ISP router and now my smartphone connects and keeps connected (!) to the 5 Ghz wifi of that ISP router. So far so good, but I bought the Asus router for nothing...

And now I have 10 MB/s UP and DOWN. Cool Happy

The configuration you used was

A router behind a router.

I never use that setup. If I keep the first router as a router the second router becomes a WAP. Google this "How to use a router as a WAP."

Now if you want to use the second router as a router, the modem+router must have a pass through feature to turn it into a modem only.

Exactly you are right. You can use router fonctionality for the first or second device, and use the wifi fonctionality for the first or second device also. In the last case the second device is effectively in Access Point Mode for wifi, and the wifi on the first device should me turned off : this is what I did.

I didn't receive support from Asus. If a have news from them I'll update this thread.
