Problem connecting to internet via cable modem

Jul 22, 2007 7:58AM PDT

Hi, I've tried to fix a friend's computer that uses a cable modem. It states that the ethernet adapter is "limited or no connectivity, firewalled." I disabled the firewall, but still cannot connect to the internet. The cable company has already checked the modem and wires and they are all working properly.

It is Windows XP, Motorola SB5101 Cable Modem.

Are there any suggestions on how to fix the problem?

Thank you.

If you are changing from their PC to your PC you have to remember it remembers the old PC's "MAC ADDRESS." To restart you have to disconnect the old PC and then connect yours. Now power down the cable modem for at least 20 seconds then power it back up. When all the usual lights are on start your machine.

I'll skip PC settings since you didn't tell about them.

Not a Mac

The friend's computer was working fine and for some reason it would not connect again. It is not a Mac and we haven't switched anything. At least nothing that I know of. Sorry for the confusion.

in your post that you changed computers as Bob and Grif seemed to assume. Am I correct?

Did you try the XP Internet Connection Wizard and the Troubleshooter?
If these do not work, you might try this Cable Modem Troubleshooting Tips site.

Hope this helps some

They got it fixed some how. He called me today and said it is working. Must have had someone look at it and fixed it. Thanks again!
