problem burning dvds; is it my dvds or my dvd burner?

Mar 31, 2006 7:00AM PST

hi
i've gone through about 25 dvds trying to figure this dvd burning stuff out. I thought i had it all figured out but I still can't get anything playable on my dvds.
I have a toshiba sd-r6012 dvd-RW drive, firmware 1f34. I can burn cdrs no problem. dvd write speed is 1x

I'm using winavi converter 7.1 to convert avi files (downloaded from the internet and watchable on player) to dvd files. I get a folder titled dvd_0 and it contains two folders, an audio_ts and a video_ts. So far so good, right? I then am using nero 7 burning rom to burn a dvd.
I followed the directions step by step on a website (dvd-video,iso 9660, copy video_ts files in the new video_ts folder). The avi file is 1.5 hours and The process takes a while to burn then when i verify the writing on the dvd it locks up and doesn't get past 4% verification.

I've tried to skip the verification and the dvds still don't play. They are dvd-r platinums 1-4x

I have a fujitsu n series lifebook. I've had the laptop for three years burning cds but never having a need to burn dvds until recently. What am i doing wrong?
how can i tell if the disks are faulty or if my dvd burner is faulty? Is it possible for a dvd drive to burn cds fine but not dvds?
when i do a search about this toshiba dvd-rw i find a lot of queries about burning dvds. Are people just confused about the difference between burning dvds and cds or is this dvd drive known to have problems.
thank you to anyone that could offer some help.
ernesto

Checks...
Mar 31, 2006 7:50AM PST

* Verify that the it's DVD-R and not DVD+R. (It can't handle the latter.)

* Try using a DVD from the stack and the burner to burn a Data DVD as opposed to a Video DVD and see if it's readable.

* Try using alternative burning software, such as CDBurnerXP, which can also burn DVDs. Hopefully it's just Nero having a bad day, week, month, whatever.

* Try burning one of the DVDs from the stack using another computer's burner to see if it's faulty media.

* If the first to fail and the third succeeds, check the device drivers (right-click My Computer, select Properties, select the Hardware tab, and click Device Manager), and see if there are any flags. Regardless, try reinstalling the software/drivers associated with the drive.

* If possible, swap the drive out with another one and see if it works.

* If it still won't work, the drive's likely on its way out. When one is failing it's entirely possible for it to handle CDs but not DVDs, so you'll need to start looking around for a replacement.

Hope this helps,
John

I put in an old BTC LG (Electronics) DVD\CD +\- RW
May 13, 2006 4:53PM PDT

And My Nero reads that it is only CD-R compatable. So I put in my old CD-R in. There a check marks which will tell you what the drive is capable of (burner). On my CD/DVD-ROM, it can read CD-R, CD-RW, CD+R, CD+RW, CD, DVD, DVD-R, DVD+R, and DVD+/-RW's and more.
You will see dots in front of what it can do. Check your Nero InfoTool. My list for the reader also has the following: CD-G, BD-R, BD-RE, BD-ROM,DVD+/-R DL & DVD-RAM. I am clueless as to what all of them are except the ones above. It is a new item and listed as TssTcorp DVD-ROM SH-D162C that I bought from Gateway.

PS-Nero 6.6.1.4 is what I have.

It's happened to me.

The Nero that was on the machine was "tagged" to only work with the DVDRW drive that it came with. The drive failed and the new drive would not function with Nero until I wiped out Nero and installed the full retail version.

Sound familiar?

sorry to be so late in responding. I did what you suggested and finally went out and bought a dvd burner. I guess my dvd burner that the laptop came with never worked! I should have tested it out when i bought it.
thanks so much for the help.

Problem is Nero
May 15, 2006 3:13PM PDT

I had bad experience with Nero 7 Ultra Edition. It messed up my DVD burner, after I installed it, even after an uninstall. Had to get a gateway tech to straighten out my system. Nero 7 has problems with certain DVD burners, and no tech support to help you.
You are on you own when it comes to Nero. The version 6 does not have those problems., oh and don't download the 7 update, it will only be a trial version that you can not get to install as a permanent version. I am using Studio 8 and 9 now with no problems. Nero seems to be a nice program in alot of ways but has big bugs and hogs you system. When you finally do get it to burn a dvd it has skips in the audio and video. My advise is to get another program or another burner that is compatible. I got another program. Will not support a company that will not support you when you need technical help.
