Problem burning additional photos to cd

Aug 22, 2005 11:18PM PDT

I'm using ME and Nero Express which came with my cd burner which is an add on. I have successfully managed to burn my pictures to a new cd and even managed to add once or twice then suddenly I can't add any more. The cd is not full. I then have tried another brand of cd and all is well until I try a second or third addition. What could be wrong.

When Nero won't burn this happens. I open nero-burn and click on data, the screen which then comes up is blank - i.e. it doesn't show what is already on the cd
It made me think the cd was empty but it isn't, the data is there if I go into read instead of burn. Please can someone tell me what if wrong, presumably it isn't the program as it works on a new cd, so is it the cd and why does it only happen after a couple of additions?

Chrisy, It Sounds Like The Disk Is Finalized Or...
Aug 23, 2005 1:01AM PDT

...the session was closed incorrectly. Although CD burning programs have the ability to leave sessions open so more items can be copied to the CD, you need to be very careful when doing so. If you happen to "finalize/close" the CD, you will be unable to add any addition data to it. And even if the session is left open, adding more pictures/data to the CD may make all the previous data "invisible" when placing it in a different CD device. It's a toss-up to it's reliability.

Unfortunately, my experience with "open sessions" hasn't been reliable. Maybe others are more successful at it. So instead of attempting to add pictures to an open session, I wait to burn a CD until I have enough data to fill up the entire CD. Once finalized, the CD can be read by any CD-Rom device.

Hope this helps.

How did I close incorrectly
Aug 23, 2005 7:48AM PDT

Thanks for your help Grif. Can you tell me how I might have closed the session incorrectly, I certainly didn't click anything to say finalise. Can I tell if the disc is finalised? I do the same each time I add so why does the result differ. In one way I was pleased to hear you found the open session unreliable too so I may just do as you do and use a new cd each time. However this leaves me with another problem, how do I finalise cds I have already done if the info. on them is invisable.

Chrisy, Start From The Beginning..

You mentioned that you can read the disk in "read mode". If that's the case, then then copy all of the files from the CD to a folder on your desktop. Once they are there, at least you have them backed up..At this point, I'm not sure how you did something wrong, but you can attempt to add pictures to your current disk and choose to "close the session" at that time. If it doesn't work correctly, at least you can use that particular disk as a "cup coaster" and burn a new, complete CD in a new project using the pictures you saved to the desktop folder.

Hope this helps.

Recheck your Nero Customisation
Aug 23, 2005 9:58AM PDT

I feel you should recheck your customisation of the Nero Express
When burning your first ''Session'' to a new CD and you have ''Add'' [adding your data] you must look within the ''More'' check boxes.
[1]
Your first Dialog box shows ''Disc Content''
[2]
Then click the ''Next'' Key/Button
[3]
The [second] dialog box ''Final Burn Settings'' click the ''More'' key button which will show you ''Allow files to be added later [multisession disc]''
[4]
Yes you may have to move the ''Extension Settings'' box out of the way to view the above check box??

Check done - still unable to add
Aug 23, 2005 8:59PM PDT

Have checked as you suggested with a new cd all seems well BUT
then checked with a cd which has data on it (verified by opening from ''my computer'')
''Disc Content'' dialog box is blank - Why would this be?
''Final Burn Settings'' box - ''allow files to be added is ticked''

''Disc Info'' box says: Session 01 (491MB)
Track 01. 00.02.00 55.51.25 (492MB) ISO 9660/Joliet (mode1) Does this indicate a problem?
The final dialog box says "Save changes to ISO1?" I have to admit not knowing what this meant I opted for "no" Should the answer be "yes"

I tried to add data to this cd despite the blank disc content but on clicking ''burn'' I was told ''could not perform fixation'' which I must say I expected.

I think I will have to do what Grif suggests and use a new cd each time, after all they are cheap enough but thanks for the help. I should mention I'm using CD-R a Read-only CD.

Please Have a Read

Firstly, have you updated the Nero Program ?? = I am now using Version 6.6.0.16. [The Nero Updates are not small in size, so if you are only only ''Dialup'' you will need an hour or more to download the Update]
[2]
Secondly, The ASUS burner I was using gave up [Had been using it over 18 months and had burnt well over 2000 discs]. The local computer technician recommended and installed a Samsung [which was at the lowest price range of their units] and over a few days burning data to thirty CD [with this burner], I received errors on twenty of the discs.
Yes, recently I found out the up priced Samsung Burners are all OK!!!
Nero ''Support'' tried about everything to assist, so I gave up and so I went out and ordered and fitted a ASUS CRW-5232AS which was only a CRW and now during the last three months I have not received a failure??

Suggest you send an Email to ''Nero Support'' detailing your problems. I have found Nero Support have always come back to me within 24 hours and they always have been most helpful.

With the above I have found with my Windows ME you have to remove the CD Disc from the CD Rom [Burner] and the reinsert the CD in the drive to enable you to read the content [It appears this is a glitch within the Windows programming]

Clarifying Dialog Box blank
Aug 24, 2005 12:43AM PDT

Thanks for your help Colin. I'm sorry if I wasn't very clear in my e-mail. What I menat was, I know there is data on the cd because I read it from "my computer". I then tried to "add" using Nero and that is when the dialog box which appears and should show all that is on the cd, appears blank.

Further to your earlier reply, I am still on Nero 5.5. but will download the update as I am on Broadband. I will also e-mail Nero Support and ask their advice.

CD-R disc
Aug 23, 2005 9:04PM PDT

Sorry I don't understand. Yes I am using CD-R discs and I have added to them on a number of occassions. My problem was that after a number of additons I couldn't add any more despite the disc not being finalised and not be full. You're right I can't alter them as they are "read only"

Burning ''problem''?
Aug 24, 2005 1:59AM PDT

I cannot speak for anyone -- better-half an exception -- more than 10K family photos have been scanned into our computers over the last five years or so for distributing to family members, and a photo album with printed pictures for each kid prepared so they have their own.

I have no favorite brand since these are distributed CDs. When I want backup, hopefully with retention, I use the CD Media World's site information,''CD-R Quality'' for making my choice and usually opt for Memorex. Knocking on wood, but so far, no problem.

Note: The gold-colored CD-R uses the PhthaloCyanine pigment and a gold reflection layer. As the pigment is transparent, the golden reflection layer shines through the bottom side giving the `golden' look. Compared to the other colored media, the reflection contrast of the golden medium is the highest and the durability of such CD-R's is said to be over 100 years. As the golden medium's reflective property is the highest, if your friends or customers have problems reading data from any other burnt media, try using the gold medium CD-R. However, caution is offered that when purchasing a packaged stack of CDs you will find that some have 'golden' outer rims but the CD is not ''gold''.

One Win98FE system has the Sony CRXE-A1, 12x8x32, between five and seven years old, the other a DogPile or something such bought from Office Max three to five years ago and I believe it was free after rebate, IDE-5230, 52x32x52. The software is EZ CD Creator 5 Platinum v.5.3.5.10p, but I believe updated to that, and has operated flawlessly.

Sessions are left open, erasures, deletions, etc., etc., have been performed on how many, I wouldn't know. The only problem that has raised it's ugly head was that on two occasions, -- on the system with the Sony after a format -- the program simply refused to read the CD prompting that a valid CD be put in the drive and that's it. Stick that CD in the DogPile drive and everything is hunky-dory -- just don't try it at anytime in the Sony however. As for as the distributed CDs, only one person reported a problem reading it but before I could get a hold of them to ascertain what if anything was wrong with the CD, they reported they had figured it out and they had the CD information. Good question that. Was it the CD or their graphics viewing program, or user competence?

I find that EZCD writes the files (seen only in true MS-DOS, accessing the CD drive, typing dir, and then pressing Enter) AutoRun.INF (43-bytes), Udfrchk.exe (40KB), and Udfrist.zi (386KB), to each CD formatted or else has written them to the CD when exited the first time and leaving the session open. As far as I know now, the only additional file on a closed CD session is the AutoRun.INF -- the other mentioned two are not there -- I could be wrong about that.

If I were to take a shot at your reported problem, I would simply state, ''get a different program'' or determine somehow whether there is conflict of some sort on your system using what you have. If that doesn't work with the hardware you have, ''buy one that works'' -- those things are cheap and sometimes FREE.

Sorry I am a Newbie
Aug 24, 2005 6:50AM PDT

Very new in fact and you've lost me. I gather you think I should buy gold quality cds and I will look and see what is available. Mine don't give any indication just Parkard Bell, 52xspeed 700Mb Phillips same speed and size - no sign of quality.

As for chancing program, do you mean stop using Nero?

I think I'll just burn a session at a time using a new cd if I can't make additions but thanks for the help.

When I add data to a CD-RW
Aug 24, 2005 7:34AM PDT

using Roxio, the previous data doesn't show up until after new data is added. So in other words, the CD appears to be blank until I click on add. I had Nero but never really used it so I don't know if it is the same with that program.

One thing I do is use a CD-RW to add data until it is full. Then I make a copy of it using a CD-R. I find using CD-RWs as temporary storage works better than trying to add to a CD-R. And by waiting until the CD-RW is full, I don't waste CDs or have to store as many.

CD-RW over CD-R
Aug 24, 2005 7:02PM PDT

Sounds a good idea but as I said I'm very new to this so what is the advantage of a CD-RW over a CD-R. If I'm right in thinking I could alter photos on the CD-RW which I can't on the CD-R it would definately be a good thing.

Did you buy your Roxio program or did it come with the CD writer as my Nero did? I might have to change if I still have problems.

The advantage of a CD-RW
Aug 24, 2005 7:43PM PDT

is it can be erased. After I fill a CD-RW and make a copy on a CD-R, I erase it and use it again. I also have CD-RWs I use to transfer data to other computers that don't have easy access to USB drives.

I've used Roxio since I got my first burner. The reason? I like the program. I currently have 6.0 which I bought. Others like Nero. There are other programs but those are the most common.

If you like Nero, it should suit your needs. Every program has a help section built in or a service and support at the web site.

Life of a CD
Aug 26, 2005 9:01PM PDT

After reading your advice I though you might be interested in the contents of an article I have just read in my local Family History Magazine although it originally came from a Dutch magazine ''PC Active''.
''They placed information on a range of CD-Rs. The discs were stored in a dark cupboard for two years. In Aug.2003 they were removed and re-tested. The result showed 10% in aging problems. The dyes in the recording layer had faded - all that remained on the discs was a long string of nothing.''
They suggest storing on CD-RWs but haven't said if they ever tested the life-span of these as well as CD-Rs. They also say re-copy them every 3 years or so. Apparently The National Archives in Kew have echoed the same views - I would like to read what they have to say, must tried and contact them.

I don't use CD-RWs for
Aug 27, 2005 8:57AM PDT

permanant storage. I also don't use programs like InCD or DirectCD, actually it's called Drag to Disk on the newer versions of Roxio, to create a CD-RW. I find adding data to a CD-R unrealiable. With so many other ways to store my "stuff" until I burn it to a CD or DVD, why take the risk?

Remember to clean Lazer lens every ten hours of use.
Aug 24, 2005 8:09PM PDT

Speaking from experience, use CD lens cleaner.Dirty lens will cause errors and no successful burns. You;ll think its the burner or the media but, its not. A simple lens cleaning will save alot of time, money and headache.

What kind do you use?
Jan 10, 2006 10:37PM PST

I have found every cleaner Ive used in either of my cd-r/rw drive or my newer dvdr-rw drive spins the disk so fast it eats the brush making the cleaner usless after one or two uses.
