Nov 10, 2009 11:51PM PST

I have a Dell XPS M140 laptop 1GB Ram, 80 GB hard drive). I upgraded to window 7. Since tahn I can not connect it to internet (wireless or wired). When I connect it to TV via S-video, it does not display and picture. I have tried to upgrade drive manually by downloading from other computer, still id does not work. I have tried to do CTRL+F11 to reinstall window XP, but it is also not working. I have tried to wipe out drive on which win 7 is inasteed but these sofware are not working on window 7.
Can anybodu suggest how can i make it a functional computer again.
In my laptop DVD drive is also not working.

Thanks.

That may be proper.

While the OS is upgraded what did you do to go get DRIVERS for your machine? That is, did you go to dell.com for Windows 7 drivers for this machine?

Many leap to the new OS and learn about drivers this way. Rough way to find out.

The problems are just starting for microlimp
Nov 11, 2009 4:33AM PST

This is part and parcel with what I a hearing - win7 is worse than vista - all they did was dummy down some of the annoyances and now they deny support.

I will contribute to the hoardes of profits taken in by oems when a system twice as powerful can be had for half the cost. However microlimp will not give you support for the myriads of technical problems that abound with the win 7 o/s by itself. Thats right - microlimp is again sleezing with the oems to deny self built REAL pc's oem purchased win7 support. ANd let me tell you there are a million reasons to not buy MICROLIMP.

I know the industry - 25 years. Upgrading to win7 from vista made the worst absolute crap out of my 46" Samsung Series 5 screen.

I have tried it all and nothing will restore the quality as well there is 1" blank bands left and right and 1/2" blank bands top and bottom.

4gb, gigabyte p55ud3r, i7860 x 1156, asus EAH4890 Top.

windows7 from the functionality is just mixed around garbage and neither vista nor win 7 have offered anything but crap to enthusiast gamers.

As far as support!!!!!

I had the occasion to call Microsoft support in regards to W7 and was immediately connected to a technical support person (no charge). Because some have a problem that they can't diagnose and probably caused through their actions; it is all about the crap OS design and the corporate hierarchy. This OS is designed with the average non-technical user in mind. If one has such a problem with Windows why do they continue to use it and not an alternative? Your descriptiion of the system proves my point

driver?? what's a driver??
Nov 13, 2009 4:20PM PST

Since I've installed win7, it's found drivers for every peripheral, hardware device or part in my machine. and what really impressed me the most, it found newer drivers for my logictech webcam and my hp printer without me having to search and install them myself. no 'bangs' under device manager, which is odd for me..

That is good news.

I think tech support staffers can breathe now that Microsoft didn't fix the driver issues. That is, even Windows 7 will require the trip to the shop counter to sort this out (hopefully.)

As long as owners continue to think that driver finding and install and "no bangs" means the drivers are proper my buddies in tech support lands will continue to have income.

Sorry if this tone is unacceptable but I do this to spur you into action. GET THE INSTALL PLAN FROM THE MACHINE'S MAKER.

Get that plan!

Sorry to write this.

But MSFT is still not the place to go for drivers. I found a laptop the the video drivers were dicey when we used the MSFT method. Back to Intel.com and that fixed it.

Next was some USB to RS232 Prolific based serial adapter. The MSFT driver is dead. Does not function on Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. Again, a little work gets the right driver. I happen to have the product UPC here. It's 757120268864 (google finds that) and the driver that worked is from Prolific dated 7/17/09 and version 3.3.5.122

The one from MSFT does not work on 7 Pro 64 bit.

Sorry, but MSFT may be trying hard but still falls short. Why not write a page about how to do this the old fashioned way?

This is just patently unfair
Nov 18, 2009 10:49PM PST

To hold Microsoft to account for not having literally --and yes I mean literally-- hundreds of thousands of drivers at the ready? Please...it's just absurd and a standard NO OS maker could possibly meet.

This isn't directed at you, personally, but the general tone here in this thread and others that somehow Microsoft is to be faulted because people upgraded an OS without doing due diligence. It's ridiculous.

I must be unfair here. I tried fair.

The advice being handed out is INCOMPLETE and while MSFT is trying harder they would do everyone a favor and admit it works "most of the time". Then tell what to do next.

There is another area I think I must post about and that is the WINSXS problem. I've yet to find a tool to clean that up and keep it from unchecked growth.

Wait for this to hit the news in the next year.

What is the actual problem with it?

This should be a new discussion.

The problem is simple. " it will continue to grow as the OS ages. "

MSFT seems to think that's OK. MSFT seems to think it's OK to reload the OS every year or so.

With the size of today's hard drives...

This is actually an issue? I'm still not getting what the real problem is, nor why this would necessitate an OS reinstall. But agreed; this is off topic.

How big is it?
Nov 19, 2009 2:35AM PST

It is in the gigabytes and growing. This issue will make the news.
