Problams with reinstallation

Aug 29, 2007 12:19AM PDT

I just replaced my hard drive,(the old one after over 4 years was showing problems) After backing up everything I wanted, I installed XP using the discs that came with the computer. Dell Dimension 4600. Everything appears to be right except I can't connect to the internet and it won't reconize the memory, that is it only reconizes 256MB.I have a GB.It tells me that drivers are not installed for PCI input device, ethernet controller, multimedia input controller. I just got Wild Blue satellite hookup and it works fine. Where can I find the drivers I need? Thanks in advance for your help

Drivers

Dell provides a driver cd with their machines. You will need it to reinstall the drivers. If you don't have the cd, you can go to their website to download the drivers for your particular machine.

I installed the discs that came with the computer. It worked fine before so the drivers were there. My problem with going to Dell (and I thought of this earlier) is I can't connect to the internet and my other computer (which will connect) can't burn discs. Thanks and keep thinking. I'm at my wits end.

If I can't burn disks I use the USB memory key.

Then again, CDRW drives and DVDRW drives are so cheap I fix that issue fast. And why not steal the working CD/DVDRW to use in the failed machine?

Thanks. I thought of borrowing the drive and the bride raised cain because she didn't want all that crap on her computer. TOUGH. It will remove and go back where it belongs. After being married to the woman for over 50 years, you get in a zone where you just don't argue. Time to rethink.

Well, I thought swapping drives was a good idea, but the wifes computer only has SATA drive. There is not an IDE provision on this machine. Anyone got any ideas?

Okay, I figured out how to open Boot & Nuke and cleaned everything out. I got a clean install on the OS. I installed everything that came from Dell originally. I didn't load anything else. It still won't connect with the internet. The tech at Wildblue said to go to tools>internet options>connections>lan settings>auto connections. What am I missing or doing wrong? Thanks

Usually that's still drivers.

I'm going to share my checklist.

1. Install the XP SP2 CD.
2. Use F6, floppy if needed (SATA drives!)
3. Install the motherboard chipset drivers.
4. Now install video, audio and other drivers.
5. Ethernet, wifi and such drivers.
6. Install the antivirus, firewall and run Windows Update.
