Question

Printing issue

Nov 27, 2015 7:05AM PST

I run a small business using a Lenovo Thinktank Desktop and a Lenovo G50 laptop. I upgraded both recently from Windows 8 to Windows 10. My Desktop has Windows 10 Pro and my laptop has Windows 10 Home and I have the Stardock Start 10 programmes on both systems. I use a simple Word A4 plain page as a business letterhead with my business name and logo in the Header and my business address in the Footer, adding text as necessary each time I use it. However, when I print from my Desktop, although it looks fine on the screen, the address in the Footer is printed some 2.5 centimeters from the bottom of the page although when I print from my laptop, it prints perfectly at 1 centimeter from the bottom of the page. Both computers have a wireless link to my Canon MG5350 printer. Nothing I have tried will adjust the printing location of the address from my Desktop ! Any ideas anyone please ?

That adjustments are sometimes non-standard. What I see here won't apply or be missing.

I didn't see where you went to Canon.com and installed the same driver on each machine. This is something not automatic with W10 upgrades.

I'm also seeing more folk not knowing about "printable area" settings. Again, these might be in the printer settings or the app. As I'm not there to see what you see I can only note where I look.

Answer
Since there's 2.54 CM per inch, I'm guessing one's using...

...inches and the other's using centimeters. Since US standards use inches and UK standards use centimeters, that would seem to jump out at me. Worth investigating.

Good luck.

Printing issue

No sadly, that`s not it, and sorry if I didn`t explain sufficiently clearly. The desktop prints the file with the footer address 2.5 cm from the bottom of the page whereas the laptop prints the same file correctly at 1 cm from the bottom of the page.

So it's Word.

I'll keep this short. Word re-renders, re-formats documents on the fly from machine to machine based on not only the printer driver but display driver and fonts on the machine.

This means you can NEVER expect a Word document to print the same from PC to PC. This can cause heads to explode.

--> You are asking Word to be a Type Setting App. Word is not a type setting app.

WORKAROUND? Change to a type setting app or DTP app. There many.
Also, printing to a PDF might get you a document that prints the same from more than one PC.

--> Now that we worked the margins and such, I'm going with the old Word as DTP issue. There are thousands of prior discussions on that so I'll hit pause here.
