Printer Sharing Problem using USB

by DrStanF / August 23, 2006 7:01 AM PDT

I have a wireless network operating using a router. Using Microsoft Windows network I am able to do printer sharing. I installed a new printer a Dell 1710 using the parallel port. Printer sharing worked normally. When I switched to the USB ports on the printer and computer I began to have trouble. The remote computers could see the printer but could not print. The printer connection constantly was refreshing. Does anybody have any suggestions as to what might be causing the problem and how to correct it. Of course I could get a longer parallel port cable. Any help would be appreciated. The printer is installed on a Sony PCV -- LX800 running Windows 2000 Pro. The machines trying to remotely access the printer are running windows XP Pro and Widows XP media.

Re: remote printing

I don't have such troubles here with my USB Canon printer.

All I can suggest: uninstall and reinstall the printer on the 2 computers where it doesn't work from. If that doesn't help: uninstall on those 2, uninstall and reinstall on the one it is connected to, then reinstall on those 2.

Hope this helps.

The power saving setting on the USB port has been known to be trouble and most owners are blissfully unaware of motherboard drivers and settings. Over at usbman.com we have the usual tricks and tweaks but I don't read in your posts you have done either the latest motherboard/usb drivers or the tweaks from usbman.com

If all that fails then consider adding an USB print server. I set up one recently and it worked fine. A little rough on owners that don't follow the instructions but when they do it worked.

Problem Solved

Just so you know. In reinstalling I had created duplicate printers. Only one of which was actually connected to the hardware. If the remote machines selected the incorrect printer they couldn't print.

Thanks for all of your help.

Duplicate printer names shouldn't be allowed by Windows, I think. If it's true, it's a bug.
