Printer sharing

Sep 8, 2007 1:20AM PDT

I'm having trouble setting up a printer (Lexmark 7170) on a new Vista laptop. The printer is attached to a desktop pc running XP. I have set up both machines to the same workgroup, I can see the printer thru the network on the XP machine, but I cannot connect? I have also installed the printer drivers on the vista machine and opened a local port with the printer address, no luck. I have also updated the printer drivers on the XP machine. I tried to add the Vista drivers to the XP machine, but got errors when i tried to use the printer software. I've also tried turning on UDC and installing the Vista printer drivers, and then turning UDC off, with no luck, no third party firewall only windows. I've also tried to disable the firewall, no luck. Any ideas of what I can try next? Thanks, Steve

What about accounts?

You logon to your Vista as some username. Is there a matching username on the XP Machine?

Change user name

My logon user name on the XP machine was "Owner" so I changed it to be the same as the vista machine. Still no luck. Also every time it seems I try to print from the vista machine, I have to do a driver install for the printer on the XP machine?? Bout to give up, because I'm not that sure of myself on the Vista machine, starting to get confuesing and the XP machine is acting up, all I need is for it to stop printing. Thanks

Not how I fix that.

I instead create the matching name account on the XP box. AND THEN I SHARE THE PRINTER.

Why is that important? Because XP won't add users to this shares allowed users automatically. Creating the account then the share sidesteps this issue and makes it easier since most don't want to look into or know about ownership, permissions and account issues.

I tried that, but still doesn't work. The printing job just sets in the que for about 5 or so min, then I get a printer communication problem (Lexmark). I'm starting to think its the lexmark vista drivers for the 7100 printer. thanks

You've successfully shared the printer. Your last post has new and interesting information I didn't read in your first posts. Next up is to look for latest drivers and what's in the Event Viewer.
