"The Dell CD".

I don't have a Dell, but as far as I know Vista comes on a DVD. Anyway, my Vista Home Premium (directly from Microsoft does).

My daughters laptops (a Fujitsu Siemens) XP came on a CD, but there also was a 'drivers and application CD'. So the correct answer for a reinstall of that laptop should have been: "first the original Fujitsu recovery CD to install Windows XP, than the original Fujitsu driver and application CD to install all necessary drivers."

I'm not yet convinced you installed all drivers. That would be an explanation. Another one is that hardware (either the USB-port or the printer) went south during your reinstall. That's less likely in my opinion.

Make and model of printer and how it's connected. If it's a Dell printer, I can most likely get you working again. Currently switching computers and notes are on old laptop for repair.

We know you're using Vista. Did this printer work with Vista before? It's possible Windows Updates installed the wrong drivers and/or installed them incorrectly.

HP printer

Yes the printer was working before the re-install. I have a HP Deskjet F2210. It's not but about two months old if that old.

system restore, first take it before Microsoft Updates and see if you get it back. That's usually the easiest thing to try first.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
