Printer Error Message. Filter failed.

Mar 18, 2016 6:10PM PDT

Hello All.

I use an iMac desktop with a Canon Color Image Class MF8580 c d w printer. My system information is as follows:-

OS X El Capitan, Version 10.11.3 (15D21). iMac (21 inch, late 2013).
Processor 2.7 GHz, intel Core i5. Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR 3, Graphics intel Iris Pro 1536 MB.

I recently updated the OS from Yosemite to El Capitan and have begun to get to error message "Filter Failed. I am advised that El Capitan has changed several things not to work properly or at all.
I cannot print anything. I have tried re-installing the printer to no avail.

I am thankful for any assistance with a view to solving the problem as I am not savvy with Apple mac. I am more of a Windows user.

You attention is greatly appreciated.

Standeb.

Hello Mrmacfixit,

Thank you for your reply. I followed your link but I am minded that El Capitan was installed only three weeks ago and would have the new drivers. Trouble for me is that I am not savvy with this type of computer would like to know whether I should download all the items I saw there i.e, Drivers, Software and Firmware. Then I ask the question:- Would I be given instructions for installing the drivers, software and firmware? Do forgive me if I may be asking dumb questions but I need to be sure I will be doing the right things since I have no experience with regards to a mac.

You kind indulgence is greatly appreciated.

What to download
Mar 19, 2016 4:06PM PDT

Start off with the MF Printer Driver & Utilities V10.6.0 (Intel: Mac OS X 10.6/10.7/10.8/10.9/10.10/10.11)

Read the "How to download and Install" line on the download page,
Hit the Select button, agree to the Disclaimer and hit the download button.

Once downloaded and installed, delete the Canon from your printer list and then add it back in. It should pick up the correct driver then.

If need be, go back for the remaining Scanner and Fax drivers if you need them.

Hello mrmacfixit.

Thank you so much for your assistance. The delay is replying is by reason of an urgent personal matter. My apologies therefor are in order and I so do apologise.

I followed the link given by you and downloaded the printer drivers and the printer worked in so far as printing and copying was concerned. However I cannot get envelopes to print and I think I am doing the correct things. I thought of downloading the recommended software and firmware but the the firmware cannot be opened because the the same comes from an unknown developer. I searched the app store for same and found nothing. I wonder perhaps if the software is the problem or both the software and firmware and/or how would I be able to obtain any of them.

Your kind assistance will be greatly appreciated.

With thanks.

Hello mrmacfixit,

I refer to my reply of date March 22 2016 to which I have not had the courtesy of a reply and which is six (6) days old.

I have tried everything to have the firmware with respect to the printer downloaded and installed, however from within the printer itself I was able to update the old firmware and it worked. Now the Fax function does not work. I tried to update the fax from within the printer but has e received the same error message i.e., "Cannot open application as it comes from an unknown developer. The application can only be opened if it comes from the App Store". I Checked and there is no such application at the app store. Tried writing to Canon South America (my region) and have not received a reply from them to date. I guess I will have to do this myself but I don't know how without help from this forum or Canon Inc., itself. What a dilemma!!!

I wonder what and/or if any other, recommendations you, Griff or Profitt may make with a view to a solution of the problem. My small business is really suffering as a result thereof.

Thanking you for your kind assistance.

Hello All,
Permit me to refer to the matter at caption. Since my last two (2) messages of date March 22 and 28 respectively, I have not had a reply thereto and thus my disappointment. I am gathering that perhaps I may have done or said something offensive and have been expelled from the forum for reasons I am not aware of or that no one in the forum can assist any further.

If this be the case I shall be thankful if I can be advised of any transgressions I may have committed and/or whether any further assistance can be rendered to me with a view to a solution to the problem complained of.

Thanking you.

I've read the above and it sounds like you can print now.

The issue about the "unknown developer" is something you either ignore or take back to Canon. No one here can fix that one.

About letter printing. Here to sniff that out I print the envelope on a full sheet of paper to see where the printing lands. Now I use the envelope feed in the left or right to match where it prints.

Hope that helps.
Bob

PS. These forums are all volunteer so if you must get fast answers folk have to hit the maker of printer or computer.

Suggestions.

Hello Standeb,

I think the problems is about your updated the OS from Yosemite to El Capitan, so if you want to fix the printer error just downgrade to your last version or you need to compare and follow your printer manual. For examples, your printer driver is a support to EL Capitan or find the latest printer driver and install it and try it again. Hope you will get the solution.

All the best,
Thein Nu.
