Printer Disappears

May 4, 2004 12:09AM PDT

I am having trouble getting my printer to work. I have a Linksys print server hooked up to my Linksys router. I have two computers operating on Windows 2000 hooked up to the router. My old HP Officeject V pritner worked fine on the print server. I installed the new driver and printer on both laptops just fine. The printer will print when hooked directly up to the laptops. The printer will also print for one of the laptops when hooked up to the network. This laptop is sending it's print jobs to the printer via a port designated for the Linksys router.

Here's the problem: When I am in the printers screen of the control panel, I right click the new printer icon and go to the properties of the new printer. I change the port of the printer from the USB port to the linkssys print server port. When I hit apply and close, the printer disappears from the printers screen. How do I keep that printer from deleting itself everytime I change the port?

Which printer is disappearing? Are you adding a second printer or replacing the one you already have? Make sure you don't use the same name / share name.

The new printer is disappearing. The old printer is on there and set up to use USB. The same configs are working on the other computer (old printer can print using USB and new printer prints via the server port).

The problem is when I go into the new printer's properties and change it to read the Linksys server port, the printer's icon disappears from the printers screen. If I plug the printer directly back into the computer, the computer re-runs the set-up process again.

If you look on Network Neighborhood do you see the networked "new" printer? If yes and you double click on it does it then show up in your printers folder? It may ask for a driver to be added. Do you have admin capabilities when adding it? Do you have a firewall enabled on one machine that is different than the other?
