Printer and File Sharing

Nov 13, 2006 10:41AM PST

I have two computers. One is XPHome SP2 the other is Win98 SP2. They share DSL. I would like to also share files and the printer but I have been told because of the differing operating systems this cannot be done. Is this the case?
It is not of great importance to do so but it would make life a little easier. Although I have two printers one is ancient and very slow. For back up purposes I am swapping files using CD's and/or a flash card. File swapping would streamline that operation.

Well, possibly

First of all if they have to be connected to the same router or switch, If they are great your about halfway there. Then just use microsoft network setup wiz on XP and at the end it asks to create a setup disk if you want, say yes and create one. Then plug this into the win 98 comp if it recognizes and lets you set up the network with the disk, you should be able to share. Given that your router or switch isn't going to be a butt.

Good Luck

...and both computers connect to the router, then start with the XP computer, using the Network Setup Wizard to setup a "Workgroup" name and share out the folders/printers of choice..Then do the same on the Windows 98 (I think you mean Second Edition NOT SP2) computer..

Hope this helps.

You both make it sound simple and I am going to give it a shot. (Keep in mind in spite of my many years with computers, I am a perennial Newbie).
Yes, Grif, I meant Windows 98 Second Edition.
Grif, I clicked on your link to Network Setup Wizard and it seems to involve wireless and my router connection is wired. It is Ethernet Cable/DSL Router. Would I skip the first sections and proceed to Running the Network Setup Wizard?

...it's easier to start with the XP and use the Network Setup Wizard.

Hope this helps.
