Print Spooler Stopped, Windows XP Home Edition

All my printers disappeared from the Printers and Faxes list.
PNP will not recognize either the Brother MFC 8600 or HP 7150.

The "add printer" option returns the message "Operation
could not be completed". The last time this happened I
found that the entire printer list was still in memory and one simple change restored the list but I can not remember it.

I found the print spooler service is stopped.

Entering the command "net start spooler" at the command prompt returned the message "system error 1068 has occurred. The dependence service or group failed to start."

Server properties could not be viewed under
settings/printers and faxes/file/server properties either.

Also the printers key does not appear in the registry
editor
under "Hkey_local_machine/system/currentControlSet/control/
print/???"

Please help.

John

Use System Restore to when it worked.

There are too many things that need fixing from my experience so let's use the tool.

If you read the following MSKB article:

Q324757- ""Spooler Subsystem App Has Encountered a Problem and Needs to Close" and "Operation Could Not Be Completed" Error Messages

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environments\Windows NT x86

should have as subpathes

Drivers

Print Processors

More than that, under Drivers there are Version-x subpathes. For windows XP, version-3 is needed (which the article doesn't say).

Missing those registry subpathes and additinally the fact that your spooler service can't be started leads to a seriuos damage that can't be manually redone.

I'd second that you should try System Restore. If that doesn't work, your next option is an in-place repair.

All,

I found the problem!!!

LexBce Server, under msconfig/services was stopped.
This supports the print spooler.

Thanks,

John

OK, I understand that LexBce Server was involved, although you actually have Brother and HP printers and none of Lexmark.

However, can you test again with LexBce service disabled that the following registry path exists because I don't see the point of vanishing version-3 key when that service is disabled.

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environments\Windows NT x86\Drivers\Version-3

Finally, if you want to get rid of it permanently, use the steps from this How to clean up printer drivers (bottom of that page).

You are welcome and "Good Luck",
