Try shift + printscreen.

On my keyboard, it's a shifted function (the non-shifted is labeled SysRq).

If that doesn't work, try any screen capture program like snagit from http://www.techsmith.com/download/snagittrial.asp
There might be freeware available also, but I didn't look for it. Just mentioned a program I happen to know.

To clarify, when you press the ...

Printscreen key or the Alt + Printscreen combo for only the active window and then paste it into a graphics application such as MS Paint there is nothing on the clipboard to paste?

Under Windows Printscreen no longer sends console output to the printer, it sends it to the clipboard as a graphic. Since it isn't text you can only paste it into an application that can handle graphics. Wordpad is able to have a printscreen pasted into it but Notepad cannot.
