Print jobs never close

After HD replace and Win98 reinstall, HP DeskJet 712c prints jobs correctly but continues to show the document status as printing. Attempt to purge print documents doesn't work. Using task manager to end task [spool32(not responding)]locks entire system up tight requireing cold boot. Upon restart (after scandisk finally completes) I am prompted what to do with unfinished print job. Using most current driver available from HP (Oct 1998!) HP utility says communication between printer and computer is OK both directions. All critical Win 98 Updates still available are installed. Current Firewall, AV, SpyBot etc... up to date and running. Same computer and printer worked together fine for years before HD replacement. Other than this one issue current system meets all my needs, old as it is. Since Computer locks totally up without giving any error messages, I don't know where to begin any knowlege base searches. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

If this is a new WIndows install, some motherboards require drivers. But without make/model I can't tell. Microsoft doesn't fetch or install them.

use safe mode to uninstall printer, then regular boot to see if problem pops up. If not, reinstall printer. There are spool settings in "printer properties" that can be wrong except for default setup.
Also, start>run>"msconfig" and turn off anything related to printer. It will still work fine when you need it.
