Print from Workgroup to a Domain Printer

Feb 28, 2008 10:01PM PST

I have a user that is on a workgroup but wants to print to a sharded printer (HP 1300) that resides within a Domain. Both users are Windows XP Pro and reside on the same subnet on the network. For a number of reasons, the workgroup user does not want to join the domain, can it be done with out joining the domain?

Maybe add the workgroup user to the machine that is within the domain?
Any ideas on how this can be done without joining.

Any shared network must have users and groups with permission.

Forgot to post solution

Sorry for not posting back when I found the solution.

I had to re-do the users machine (new Hard Drive) and when I set it back up he swore that he was able to print to it before. The guy who set it up originally is long gone so I couldn't ask him how he did it, but it did work this way:

What I did was leave the machine in a workgroup, went to add a network printer, then set it up (add Network Printer) as \\IP address\hp1300 when the authentication box came up I entered the domain administrator username and password and it worked! I suppose I could have also set it up as Local Printer then went with "Standard TCP/IP Port" but I didn't try that. It printed so I left it alone. Again, sorry for the delayed post on the solution.

adding a shared usb domain printer to a workgroup pc

Try this when attempting to connect to a shared USB connected printer in a domain from a workgroup computer where TCP/IP is not an option and you don't want to join the domain.
1. start - run - \\(name of domain pc) - ie \\reception - enter
2. Enter user name & password then a dialogue box will open up displaying shared folders and printers.
3. On workgroup PC - open control panel and select printers to open the printers dialogue box.
4. select the dialogue box in step (1). right click on the shared domain printer you want to connect to and drag it to the dialogue box in step (3). Select install (it will prompt you to install the necessary drivers).
5. The shared domain printer will be added to your printers.

Hey presto you can now print to a domain shared printer from a pc thats not a member of the domain.
