primary hard disk not found

hi there,

my hardisk is a samsung 40gb model why is it that if i make this drive as a single master my system cant find it, but if i limit its capacity by inserting the pin to 30gb limit capacity the system can find it. welll its fine cause i can still use it at its limit capacity but 10gig is still a huge space to loss.
