Prepare to install

Dec 27, 2005 3:00AM PST

I got OS 10.4.3 for Christmas but haven't purchased iLife yet. Half of thos eprograms I might never use, don't have a dvd burner nor video camera. I do like saving images from my digital camera and the web to iPhoto for slide shows, etc. Should I wait until whenever I get iLife to install OS 10.4.3 as a clean install or archive the old system and install the new then install iLife? I have an iBook G3, 800 Mhz, 30 GB HD with just under 8 GB available (much of the HD has songs and images), and 640 RAM. ALSO, I want like to save some of my data to discs (e.g. doc, jpg, etc.) This may seem silly, but how do I send this info to the disc drive? Thanks

Archive and Install

will save all your data.
No need to wait for iLife 05, you already have iPhoto and iMovie and when you install the new versions, it will update itself.
There are only 4 programs in iLife, iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie and iDvd. The latter will not install as you do not have a DVD burner. iTunes is for your songs, you already use iPhoto and that only leaves iMovie. With that you can make some really cool slide shows, complete with all the neat transitions, wipes, fades, etc. and sound tracks.
Seems to me that you will be using ALL the programs that iLife installs. Happy
As for saving your stuff. It is already on your disk drive. Do you mean a CD-R?

What?

You said iPhoto is in the Tiger software? I didn't see anything about it on the box. That's why I went ahead and did the upgrade option. If I had done the archibe & install, it would have installed the latest version of iPhoto (which would be what 5,5,7)? I would like to have GarageBand also as I am a musician. A question about the widgets...the weather shows Cupertino by default. Can I change that to my zip?

Short explanation
Dec 28, 2005 5:00AM PST

iPhoto, etc.,the latest versions, are NOT included on the OS X install disks. However, they were included with every machine and were free downloads for a while. Should be around v1 or 2 on all of them. No iDVD as you do not have a burner.
So, when I said do a clean install and the iLife suite would up date itself when you installed the new version, I was referring to your comment about buying iLife 05. There is no need to wait for iLife 05 before you update the OS. Install it afterwards, when you purchase it.
GarageBand is part of iLife05
The weather widget is zip code configurable.

Color me stupid

but how do you configure the widget for your own zip code? It takes me to a accuweather.com website, I enter the zip but nothing happens to the widget. BTW, there are several widgets which are "PC ZIP". The Mac tells me I can't use stuffit expander for the operation. What do I use?

Take a close look at the widget on the screen
Dec 29, 2005 8:11AM PST

See the little "i" at the bottom right of the screen?
Click it.
Wow, who would have guessed it?

Most widgets that are configurable are set by using the little "i" which is not always in the same place.

What color do you want to be today? Happy

ZIP
Dec 29, 2005 8:13AM PST

Zip files are opened with Stuffit Expander.
Download the latest, FREE, version from the Alume web site.
Google for Expander.

Remember, it's FREE

OK...my color is better and I got the latest and greatest Stuffit Expander. Thanks loads Mr. Macfixit. But what about the burning of data to a CD? Waswhat I said correct regarding .Mac?

BTW, to all the Mac newbies out there (myself included), when you expand a new widget, it does not go to the dashboard automatically. At least mine didn't. But when I double-clicked the widget, it asked if I wanted it to go to the dashboard.

Also, stuffit does not unzip zip files by default. You must go into the Preferences > File Mapping and check the zip for expander.

In an earlier question re: the Eudora bouncing icon in the dock, there is a setting in the programs preferences to disarm it.

Dot Mac is not necessary to burn data CD's
Dec 30, 2005 11:36AM PST

in fact it is not necessary to burn any sort of CD. I have a feeling that you are confusing dot mac with the iTunes music store.
If you have a machine with a built-in CDR, just insert a blank CD into it and follow the instruction to Open Finder. CD will mount on the desktop. Drag your files to it. Eject it and the system will ask if you want to burn a cd. Say yes. End of story.

Where did you get this do mac theory from?
I'm sure I answered this question a couple of days ago

I read it
Dec 30, 2005 10:31PM PST

in I believe the help files in the library. I knew that info didn't sound right. All these arguments I read in the forum re: Mac vs. PC and I couldn't save my data to a CD? Thats a good argument to stick with the PC. Guess I'm still weaning myself from the PC. Thank God for this forum so I can learn more about my Mac without going to Apple and going the tons of pages. I'm sorry, but their website is not as easy to negotiate as their product. Do they have a chat site for tech support? Thanks for your help mac,

BTW..no, you didn't answer that question...I think.

You may be trying to over engineer the problem
Dec 31, 2005 3:45AM PST

At the apple site, click Support then Discussions and choose a forum that seems to suit your problem/question.
Alternatively, post your questions in any of the three Mac forums on CNET. There are no stupid questions, well maybe a few, but if you remember doing whatever it is you are trying to do, on the PC, then you can certainly do it, in spades, on your Mac.

Just ask, we're here
