Why Do You Need The Special Router?
May 16, 2015 1:18AM PDT

To insure that my VPN service is utilized on all wireless media. Moreso to insure that I can access Netflix etc. while in my Caribbean home. My current router is unable to utilize VPN and does not give me strong signals inside or outside the home. Hence I need to upgrade. I previously attempted to use one from Flashrouters but had too many problems and had to return it....I not that there are several pre installed DD-WRT routers that I would only need to have my current VPN service provider configure it for use. As such I would like a recommendation as to those routers and what is considered best for my need as stated...Thanks for your kind assistance

Ouch.

Ouch on many points. If you read the forum policies you see the topic of getting around Netflix's security system and more is nothing we will discuss.

As to DDWRT routers I find those are nice enough but too heavy for everyday users. That is, it's more complicated than a space shuttle control board. My bet is that a pre-installed DDWRT would have you screaming just like your last one.

http://www.cnet.com/news/top-wireless-routers-that-can-run-open-source-dd-wrt-firmware/ lists models I've seen over the years and get good coverage.

But, here's the deal. You may have other issues such as metal in the walls or poor placement of the router. I've lost count of the number of times I find the router in the basement or another incorrect location. A few times I found the router antennas not installed. (They were ugly!)

Sorry I was unclear on a point.

A "Preinstalled dd-wrt" won't make it any more supportable or easier. It only means you don't have to install it.

IO have not read the forum posts on DDWRT but soon will...while my home is concrete with embedded steel trhe problem really is the current router is inadequate for my needs and my VPN Subscription....I wish to run a network through the through the router utilizing the VPN...While I'm becoming less tech efficient in my declining years, I have decided to leave the difficult stuff for the younger brains,,,that is why I want a preconfigured DDWRT router. I shall checkout the info on your link....thanks

Pain!

I have yet to see any preconfigured DDWRT router for what you are asking for. And this should not overcome concrete and steel. I hope someone pointed both these out to you.

Not that there are ways around all this. Folk that can't configure usually get someone to come in and set it up.

One of my favorite coverage solutions is the WiFi powerline hotspot. But that's what you do after you solve your VPN issues. Since you are in a CBS forum that forbids talk about hacking through regional restrictions, let's hope you understand that and not flame out.

Contact Your VPN Service Provider...
May 16, 2015 4:58AM PDT

Many already have a commercial router suggestion which is VPN ready (there are a lot available without using DD-WRT) and is supported by the provider.. Although it's been a while, I've used Asus and Cisco routers for such purposes and in some cases, the ISP provider router will get it done. For example, my default Verizon modem/router supports L2DP, IPSEC, and PPTP. You just need to check for their support and which format/protocol is needed by the VPN service.

Hope this helps.

I have no wish to configure a router with ddwrt for that reason I want is a preconfigured router...I probably went at it wrong in the post. All I need is a list of Manufactured routers with ddwrt preinstalled as I have no idea when reading the articles whether or not the ddwrt are preinstalled or that the particular is capable of having ddwrt installed in it....sorry for the lack of clarity.

You guys have assisted me very much and I thank you however if I can get a list of the manufacturer preinstalled ddwrt routers I'll be most grateful...again thank you all contributors

The only source for pre-configured would be...

From your ISP. I have yet to find any supplier that could nail this one besides them.

Pre-installed? Yep. Plenty.
Pre-configured... Didn't find one. Why? Because your choice of ISP and VPN makes this impossible. No supplied save the ISP has a chance of getting it right.
