On most laptops (apple and pc) I kick it into hibernate first, then swap and then out of hibernate. I won't detail why I do this, but share that it works for me. It was that rare piece of field work that made us do that. Today we upgraded our gear with a 12V to 110V AC box so we don't have that issue.
I'm looking to buy a powerbook shortly, 15 in, and I'm wondering about two things in particular. First, I seem to recall reading that with the powerbook you can just unplug the battery and within three minutes place in a spare and continue working uninterrupted. I'm wondering if anyone can verify this. Also, I believe the last time Apple updated the line was in January. What is the typical length of time it takes to refresh an update and would it be reasonable to anticipate either a drop in price or an upgrade to the whole system by August? Any reasonable, reasoned responses to the second question would be welcomed.
