Power surge on usb hub

when i plugged in my 30gb usb hardrive a popup saying power surge on usb came up. i am running xp pro sp2 on a lg laptop.

the disaster that is happening is that now i cant charge using the ac adaptor. my battery is running out and it all over from there..... HELP!!

Such a drive can indeed cause a power surge.

I've yet to find a 30GB hard disk (laptop style) that can stay under the 0.5 Ampere specification for USB.

i have read up on the erroe msg and it is not what the trouble is. i can no longer use the power adaptor to charge the pc, im running on batteries and can have no way of charging. could this usb drive caused the problem? why only now and how?

You are not supposed to be able to damage the laptop by overtaxing the USB power ports, some systems didn't pass that test.

-> You are looking at sending it out to repair. Just so you know.

Look up ikenfixit.com Call and explain what you did and ask for an idea on the costs.

PS. Did you post the make and model? I think I missed that. Not that it matters, but I like to keep track of machines that do such things.

It is a LG lm50,

Shouldnt the port or windows have closed of the port when this happened? i have read the it seams to happen alot without any of these troubles. is there any way to stop it happening again?

To stop this from happening, don't plug in devices that could exceed 500 mA current draw.
