Power supply

Aug 9, 2004 3:36AM PDT

I have an older computer which I use networked with a newer one. The old one is a Pentium II 450MHZ with WIN98 OS. The power supply seems to have burned out and I am having trouble finding a 250ATX. Is it possible to put a larger wattage in such as 300 (which I can find.) Where is the best place to make these kind of purchases?

Thanks. Valerie

Actualy the truth is that it will only draw what Watts it needs. You can fit a 600 Watt or 350 Watt and it should be fine. In fact, oversizing the PSU may head off other issues.

compgeeks.com, newegg.com has 20 buck units that should be fine.

Hope it isn't too late to warn you to make sure the motherboard power connector is of the right type. If your mobo is not an ATX form factor your options on P/S's may be limited. P-II falls into the possibility of an older style motherboard (like AT).

Too Late????
Aug 9, 2004 5:53AM PDT

I have before me a sheet of paper which lists the computer info. Nowhere can I see anything about the mother-board. It does say that it has an ATX mid tower case with Power supply. Of course, I can't turn the PC on to check what it says there. I've ordered the power supply and so I'm worried now that it won't be the right one. Any other way I can tell?

Thanks, Valerie

Get the ruler out.

While many clones take a variety of ATX sizes, a ruler is best to see if it fits.

I haven't found many Pentium 2s that use the old AT so that must be in the less than .1 percent category.

That makes me feel better. It's on it's way now and so I'd better just be optimstic. Maybe I can figure out what to measure!

Thanks again. Valerie
