Power outage computer wont start

Sep 22, 2008 12:35AM PDT

HP Pavilion a1712n running Vista home
Computer was on and over night power went out. I tried to turn it on this morning and nothing happened. I have unplugged and moved to another outlet. The green light on back of tower is lit, the monitor's power button is flashing blue like sleep mode but screen is black - the fans work - when you try to turn it on it hums for a second like its working then nothing else happens. I have no reboot disc if needed. Any suggestions before I try taking to a service center (out of warranty 4 months) Thanks.

Was there a surge protector?

If not, there's a chance your computer was damaged by an electrical surge. First thing I would do is find another monitor you can use in order to determine which (hopefully not both) is at fault. Without knowing that it's mostly shooting in the dark so it's a good starting step.

yes - surge protector

The surge protector appeared to fail. The good news is the hard drive is still good. I bought a hard drive enclosure tonight and moved all the files I needed to the laptop. Are you familiar with power supplies? Could that be it? I have on old monitor I will try tomorrow just to rule that out as well. Thank you.
