Power down and Standby Lock-Up Problem

by pretensky / March 28, 2005 12:30 AM PST

I have Windows XP Media Center Edition and a week ago my system began locking up when I try to restart or power down. It gets as far as the blue power down screen and then the mouse cursor freezes and all system activity ceases. I actually have to remove and reapply power to restart the system. Also if I leave the system idle so that it goes into standby, I cannot get it out of standby. I have to recycle the power. Any suggestions? Help!

Media Center PCs are fairly new. Use the warranty.
by R. Proffitt Forum moderator / March 28, 2005 12:33 AM PST

It can save you from weeks of tinkering or just disabling standby.

Other issues can include SPYWARE or a virus. Your post didn't adjhere to the forum tip which asks " Tip: If you are asking for help to troubleshoot a computer-related problem, please be sure to include all the necessary information (ie: operating system, model number, hardware, software, etc) that will help others identify your problem for a speedy resolution." Please fill in the blanks and tell what you do for virus and spyware protection and removal.

I have run across spyware that doesn't like shutdown... Very odd new disturbing software. Its a shame that McAfee/Symantec and other antivirus programs are not helping.

I have had my SONY PCVRZ40CG Media Center PC since 1/2004. It has a 3GHZ Pentium 4 with 1GB Ram and 200GB Hard Drive. I have kept up with all Windows XP critical upgrades and am running Service Pack 2. I also update and run Spyware Blaster, SpyBot, and Adaware on a regular basis. I also have and run Norton Internet Security on a regular basis.

1. Run a HIJACKTHIS check (this forum does not offer support, but I will look if you want.)

2. Tried it with just one stick of RAM.

3. Cleaned out the box? At 1 year, its time.

4. Did you, can you extend the warranty?

5. Reload the OS?

6. Did you EVER accept any Microsoft drivers from Windows Update? (Lesson? Don't)

No to all the above. I probably should check to see if I can extend the warranty.
What is HIJACKTHIS?
I assume by clean out the box you mean to open the case and remove all the dust etc. I was planning to do that this weekend when adding a second hard drive, which SONY has assured me I should be able to do with no problem.

While at first that doesn't make sense as the reference to HIJACKTHIS, both mysteries are solved by using http://www.google.com

http://www.help2go.com/modules.php?name=HJTDetective notes a few and I wouldn't tolerate these. Here are some notes and forums to help interpet the results properly.

"Before using the Detective, you should have followed ALL of the steps in our Get Rid of Spyware Guide. If you have not yet done so, now is the time - the guide will tell you when to return to this page. Following the recommendations in the Help2Go Detective does not guarantee that you will have a clean log or a clean computer. It does help to reduce the amount of malware in your log, making it easier for an expert to analyse what is left."

..............

It did help to show what a busy machine this is. It appears to have Labview installed too. Be sure that is current since I've seen old versions crash a machine at odd times.

In reply to: Some spyware in there.

Thanks for the help. I apologize I could not respond to you sooner. I will check out the links you provided and let you know if things change.

LabVIEW is current but coincidentally, the problems I have described began to occur shortly after having updated LabVIEW with the NI Developer Suite 2005 (2/2005). I may just try uninstalling it to see if the problems go away. I will let you know.

Thanks again

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
