Power cord deterioration

May 9, 2018 11:12AM PDT

I use a MacBook Pro laptop, and the covering on the 85W MagSafe 2 power adapter cord is dissolving, apparently from frequent contact with my fingers. It's completely gone near the magnetic plug, exposing about 2 inches of metallic sheathing. Is there a fix for this that might not disintegrate in the same way, and does it require giving up the computer while it's done? I prefer not to have to don surgical gloves while handling the power connector. I use no other devices whose power cords are so delicate.
