Quite a change.

One thing which is immediately obvious - font color is a bit errr... washout ?

What was that word before ''feedback''??
Nov 8, 2006 12:41PM PST

Just kidding, Lee. Happy

I stand by what I said previously...

''Overall I absolutely love the new look, with emphasis on the alternating between light green and white for the background of individual posts. I've already become hooked on the new Threaded view and am absolutely amazed at the difference in speed...even the 'Most Recent' section updates almost instantly. New functionality may be at a minimum, but the forums have just been given a boost into the 21st century. ''

That doesn't take ya'll off the hook, though...I'm going to do the best I can to remain the #1 bug reporter so make sure you've got that shotgun loaded for when I come a knockin. Grin

having trouble with "quotation" marks. O well!

- Collapse -
You're not the only one...

It's a known glitch and is being worked on. For now instead of using quotation marks I am typing two apostrophes, which looks nearly identical. Just a quick workaround.

John, where can we get more info
Nov 9, 2006 2:59AM PST

on modifications that can be made; such as in the ZDNET forum one could change a number in the URL and set the number of posts [or whatever to call them] shown on a page. It could get into thousands.

When you have time. I know that the first priority for you will be to detect and report bugs.

Not much manipulation available...
Nov 9, 2006 4:29AM PST

The text size, number of posts per page, etc. are constants and are not changeable through manipulation of the URLs. Right now there are a couple things you can do, but they are mostly bugs that are waiting to be fixed, such as the ability to circumvent the depth limit with undesirable results.

One thing you may find useful, though, in threads that span multiple pages: At the end of the URL add &start=250, replacing 250 with whatever post number you want it to start with. That could be helpful if you want to view a specific subthread that would normally span 2 pages, enabling you to view all posts in the subthread at once.

Thanx, I will

use that tip once in a while.

I don't normally do things that bring out bugs and I will simply wait until all you knowledgeable guys and girls get things ironed out.

I like the options
Nov 8, 2006 12:42PM PST

that are new, deciding if I like the tree or flat view is going to take some time, I have been trying all 3 options. Right now the only complaint is the text needs to be darker and a bit larger. All around a good changeHappy Thanks allHappy

Text colour
Nov 8, 2006 2:45PM PST

I like everything apart from the text colour. I would prefer it to be black.

Thank you!!

I am so happy threaded view is back! Browsing is so much faster when you don't have to load a page for every single post!!

I like the drop down arrows for the links on the left side. Makes the pages shorter if you keep them collapsed except when you need them.
It would be nice if we could make one for Favorite Forums and choose which ones to show there.

I'd like Next Thread, Previous Thread, Next Unread Thread buttons.
I'd prefer darker text, also.

Bring back the 'next UNREAD message' function ...
Nov 8, 2006 11:32PM PST

... or you won't have to do anything else! That is especially essential for the threaded or flat views, but was very useful to quickly get to new posts in the old tree view (and would be for the new too).

Any chance we can get the ability for collapsed views like in the old (old old) forums? It sure was nice to be able to display only unread messages (and the thread originator of course) in a tree.

The text colors are horrible. I know you're going for something less bright, but mental ward calm is not the answer. A bigger default font (yes, I know I can change it), dark black/navy font is a MUST!!! Have previously read links show up in a medium/dark gray. I have excellent eyesight and this strains me. I can only imagine it is far worse for those with compromised vision of any sort.

Do you realy care what we think?????????
Nov 9, 2006 2:46AM PST

I have spent about 2.5 hours looking at the "new" format.
So far,,I'm not all that impressed!
The light gray front that the postings are in is very difficult to read, whats wrong with BLACK!!!
C-net used to brag about the "tree" structure of it's forums, now that is gone. The slight offset is not a easy to follow. If is a short posting or there are only 5~7 postings long is not to bad. Once to get to the longer ones it now become much harder to keep track of what has been posted and who replied to who.
I'm not an newbie here, I have been a member for four years, I have over 4300 postings. What I really like about C-Net forms is now gone. John

What a terrible attitude
Nov 9, 2006 2:55AM PST

It MUST be obvious that they DO CARE to go through the effort to make these changes. The fact that you don't like some aspect might possibly be addressed in a more friendly manner and perhaps you will get some changes made to satisfy you.

The Tree view is NOT gone...
Nov 9, 2006 3:16AM PST

The default is Threaded View, but along the right hand side just under the green forum search bar you can change your account preference at will between Tree, Threaded, and Flat. The reason for that is Cnet was losing members who wanted to be able to display multiple posts at once, as you can in most other forums, instead of loading them one-by-one, both for time, repetition, and printing purposes. You now have a choice...whether you choose to accept it is up to you.

John

Ahhh,,thank you for the info!!!!!
Nov 9, 2006 4:55AM PST

There were so many changes it is hard to take them in all at once.
Now if you can get back to the black instead of gray font color.
If you reply to a post then you get a darker easer to read font.

I do belong to other forums besides C-Net. The tree format is one of the reasons I spend most of the time if have for forum posting at C-net.
I would have been nice if C-Net would have given a small tutorial on the changes instead of just throwing us in the deep end of the pool. John

Thanks for black text
Nov 9, 2006 3:17PM PST

I don't post too much but do read the forums quite a few times a day. I like the new format, especially now that the post text has been made black. Thanks.

Members' personal preferences might always differ. I know some forum software supports a choice of stylesheets with various colours/point sizes available. Does this one?

- Collapse -
I think that the new format is GREAT.
Nov 9, 2006 3:04AM PST

And it didn't cost me a cent.

It'll take a while for me to even decide which of the formats to display the threads in will be the best for me.

As for other useful features, I'm a slow learner and will need the Mods to help. Hopefully my email Mod friend Toni H. will feed me tips as she did with the ZDNET forums.

Keep up the good work.

Font size and colour need to be changed
Nov 9, 2006 1:33PM PST

you definitely need a larger font size.

the entire image is very weak with the light green and blue.

if that cannot change a font with 12 type would help.

Good work Lee and gang!
