Possible to create a standalone network for portable devices

Hi, ok so my brother is moving into digs for the next few months for his work. He has just recently bought a laptop and asked me to set up my old wireless router at the address.

I was wondering if it would be possible to setup a wireless network(next to the phone socket) without having it connected to the laptop(by wires).

The router would need to be on another floor and this is the reason for having it connected without a ethernet cable. He would also be using his xbox 360 with it.

I just can't seem to find any thing on the net to suggest this possible. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to set this up or is it not possible? Thanks for your responses ^_^
