Porting number and pre-ordering (with Verizon)

In the pre-order sign-up screen for Verizon, it asks about all the information needed to port my number over from ATT. I've never pre-ordered a phone before, but I'm assuming that they don't port my number until I activate it right? I don't want them to port my number immediately and then i'll be without phone service for a week until i get the new phone.

why you posted your question here. Did you think to call Verizon? The reason I ask is that only you can tell them what you want.
