Totally different cars...

They're really such different cars that it's hard to compare them. The Boxter is a mid-engine convertible sports car, the BMW a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports coupe.

I'd take the Boxter, unless you think you'll need the back seats, or unless you live in a part of the country with a lot of cold weather and/or snow.

Wrong vehicle class comparison

As the post above suggested, you're comparing apples and pears. If you want to stay with either BMW or Porsche I would suggest looking into the Z4 M Roaster as it is a more viable rival to the Boxter S. Porsche really doesn't have a 3-series equivalent in their line-up. If you're looking for a non-convertible fun small car, I'd also recommend looking into the Z4 M Coupe or Porsche Cayman S.

As far as handling and joy of driving go, BMW has yet a lot of work to do to reach Porsche's chin.

The Bimmer
Jul 25, 2006 7:12AM PDT

the upcoming 3 series bimer coupe sounds like a great car and it is now and still next year will be a serious performer and the bimmer is way more practical than the porsche. also that next-gen coupe will come in all wheel drive and the only porsche thats all wheel drive is more that $70,000.
