Porn pops up when internet explorer connects?

by tasha_neko / August 26, 2004 10:58 AM PDT

Hi! I'm new Grin

For a few weeks now everytime I connect to internet explorer porn pops up when I connect. I have XP with 4 accounts and it seems like it only happens once a day on each account. I've installed Spybot and Pop-up blocker and neither has gotten rid of this. Its driving me and my family crazy! Anyone here know how to help me? I'd really appreciate it! Thanks! Happy

Tell more about your computer rig. What kind of H/W and S/W are you running. Of particular interest, are you running Internet Security and Anti-Virus S/W, and if so, what kind???

Also, you may want to consider posting your problem on the Viruses and Security Alerts Forum page.

Have you run the usual tools to eject pests?

i.e. Adaware, Spybot?

IN spybot there is a area called immunize. Make sure your pc is immunized. Not sure if this is the case but I have it set on all my computers and I don't get a lot of pop-ups.

AS for one other thing, are these pop-ups browser popups or are they what look like messenger popups?

sounds like someone feed you something thru your active X .. unless you always visit only trusted sites .. IE Yahoo, Google, MS, or other major sites you should disable your active X .. really not going to miss much but a few flash ads and get some messages telling you the active x on the site could be dangerous , but your securtiy settings prevent your acitve x on there anyway ... you are going to be surprised where you get those active X messages from .. if you don't want to disable your active X or limit it to signed controls only ... do two things to keep this kind of problem at bay in the future .. install software specifically to protect against forced installs with malilcious active x like spywareblaster .. by cooljave.com , and try to avoid visiting the types of sites known for this behavior .. warez, some file sharing sites, and the worst offenders .. amateur fan sites for kids cartoons !! well they know they are going to get newbie computer uses or their content is safe for kids so they get a lot of non - tech visitors ... and they just can't seem to resist feeding you all these paid impression programs like toolbars and ad pops .. you only see them once since you are a unique click and only count once a day per IP # the once a day appearence or only on startup is the biggest clue as to what you have ... look for some strange active x or flash file in your windows temp folder ... most spyware scanners won't find it ... but an IE specific protection program will I use WinPatol .. a quick visit to your favorite download site should give you a list of available programs ... BUT I would install SpyWareBlaster ASAP .. prevention is always the best cure Happy

There are several popups available and are free that really work well. The most efficient ones are the ones that allow you to manually designate a specific URL that you don't want to allow to popup on your screen anymore. I had the same trouble you are having. It took me several weeks to find these. But I have them on and have had nearly no popups since I put them on and got them trained. You can find them in download.com, tucows.com, and on Kazaa. They are Spyhunter2 and Popupstopper Pro. I believe there may be Shareware involved, but they were free when I got them. One of the BEST OVERALL for just about ANYthing you need on your system that I found is: System Mechanic 4, and it is NOT free, but you can download it for a trial run. It is the most allinclusive piece of software I've ever seen, and is very cheap. It can also be gotten from the above sources. Enjoy. <>< <><> Steve

Do as Bob Proffitt suggested and get Adaware to use along with Spybot. I just helped my sister with a similar problem on her computer tonight. While Spybot found her problem, it could not completely rid her computer of the problem. Adaware did. Both these two programs, Adaware & Spybot, work very well together and both have free versions. What one doesn't cure, the other most likely will. Happy

You have been hit with what is comonly called a "drive-by"; i.e. a program has been/was installed on your computer when you visited a "nefarious" website, and was done without your knowledge. Sometimes they come "bundled" with other software ("freeware") that you get on the net. Ad-aware SE, Spybot S&D, Spyware Blaster, Spyware Guard are all good programs and should remove the spyware for you. Another program you can use is "BHO Demon" to check and see what kind of BHO's (Browser Helper Objects)are installed on your system. Shut off anything you don't recognize. Some BHO's are normal, such as "acroread" by Adobe Software, or the "Google Toolbar" if you use it. Do a web search to locate these programs and download them. They're all freeware. You can also use a "HOSTS" file to prevent your browser from connecting to any site you don't want to go to. Make your own or D/L one off the net. I use the one located at "http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002" Make sure you update regularly. MVPS also details other ways to keep "crapware" off of your computer.

Good luck & have fun ;-P

The best one that I have found, (and I had the same problem you had)is a free program called "noads". You can go to www.southbaypc.com and download it. Believe me, this is the anwser if you need a free program. I also have pop up stopper, which is free. So you might want to download both.
good luck

The paid version of Pop Up Stopper is WAY more brutal on blocking them than the free version. (No I don't work for them and am not trying to drum up business for them).
It is just extremely effective.

Sounds like you may have spyware installed on your comp (programs that were secretly installed without your permission when you visited certain websites).

Anyhow... I'd recommend that you try installing Secretmaker. I've found it absolutely useful in preventing pop-ups. Go to www.secretmaker.com a

Not only does it prevent pop-ups... it prevents spam and all other sorts of stuff I won't bother to go into. Read it for yourself.

My boyfriend's computer was infected with something like that, and I remember he had a hard time getting rid of it...including going into program files, and deleting the source...also registry. You gotta find out where those pop ups come from (e.g. from what company). Then go into your progam files to manually delete it off.

Hope this helps.

This is somewhat off the subject, but i'm in a couple of UK chat rooms populated by IT professionals. ALL of them agree that 1> nearly the entire United Kingdom is on Explorer, and 2> the hackers have it completely compromized, with work arounds for the latest security patches posted on hacker bull boards before the latest 'emergency security patch' has been fully distributed from Redmond, Wash. The US seems to be following the UK's lead in this. Have you considered trying another browser? There are loads of them out there, and it's simple to download one and try it. If you don't set any of them as 'default' browser, you can select which one to run when you log on the net. Opera and Mozilla are both useful, and there are many more. (both are available as free downloads). This may solve your problem and make you more secure at the same time. Be aware that not every browser works perfectly on every web site. One good reason to have a collection. You should also (of course) run a firewall (zone alarm or other) as well as anti-virus s/w . And you DON'T open unexpected email attachments do u? *g*.. Anti spyware and anti-advert..(like ad-aware) software are also worthwhile.
Cheers..

I am using Pest Patrol with great success. The other avenue I pursued was doing a Search for the particular keywords of the site while (disconnected from the net)! and then deleted the folder and registry objects.

I find even when running several popup blocking programs at one time, some pesky windows still manage to get past my defense. The absolute best way I've found to eliminate 99% of popups is to use the Firefox or Mozilla browser instead of Internet Explorer. Yes, you still need Explorer for somethings, like updating windows, and browsing some "IE Only" web sites, but for simple browsing, especially for my kids, I've found these other two browser to be much faster and less vulnerable to ad-ware, popups and virus attacks. These browsers are available free at http://www.mozilla.org/.

Hi if you have tried spybot search and destroy which you can get free from www.download.com you can also use ad-aware from the same website thats also free and most likely that will get rid of your problem. You should update both before running them.

I had the same problem and tried all sorts to stop it. I then tried "Stopzilla" pop up stopper, which I found after doing a net search. You can "talk" to them live on their web site, they were really helpful. I installed a trial issue of the software which they updated when it did not work, since then I have had no problems, I was so pleased with the result I upgraded to the full version for approx'

I've read all the posts, and before you ask, I've had a similar problem myself. There is only one sure way to stop it. As you're running XP. it's fairly simple, go to Windows Explorer, and on your C drive, look for Documents and Settings. there are usually 3 sub-files, sometimes more. Open each one and look for another sub-file named Cookies. Open these and delete all the cookies: use [Edit\Select All] then right click on your mouse with the ccursor hovering over the selected area and click [delete].

This will delete all your cookies, what''s happened is that you've got one or more theat point your Internet Browser to a porn site.

Also, click on [Start\Settings\Control Panel} for the Internet Options. On the General Tab, look to see that your home page address has not been altered, if it has, just alter it back and click [Apply] at the bottom of the page, you should find that it will run OK now, though in some cases you will have to re-enter the details for some pages.

I have the same software loaded. Since I've been bombarded with spyware lately, somehow I ended up reloading Spybot. It is a newer version that I had and now I seem to have more control over my options. Also, my internet mail service has provided a pop up blocker and while I'm reading my e-mail, I get a question of whether to allow a spy program to load. I don't know if it's the email server or Spybot that's giving me this option. However, I might add a few popups still get through.

Do not use Internet Explorer. Even with SP2 it is still full of holes that require patching and updating continually. Use a browser such a Mozilla or Opera instead. I have used Mozilla for 3 years and no exageration, have only had maybe 3 pop-ups in that time. Porn sites alson only will pop-up on systems that have actually been to a "Questionable" site at one time or another. Do a registry defrag, that should help.

This is a common poblem nowadays. It's all caused due to browsing habbits and free software, there's nothing free in this world! What you should do ic clean out the ie temp folder, make it a lot smaller like 45 megs, delete all your cookies. Then download the following: Spybot S&D, Adaware 6, CW Shredder and after installing them get all updates, then use the programs to clean out all the stuff it finds. Some software will no longer work due to it's deleted spyware content. Well it's either this or porn, make up your mind. Sometimes the programs need to restart to finalize their cleaning because some programs that get the popups going use a service or a program that starts at computer startup. And don't download free stuff unless you're absolutely sure it contains no adware!
