it's Betamax all over again.

In reply to: re: i was right

I forget where I read it, but Sony did this with their Betamax and it was a big reason they lost, but again this time they are saying they will not allow Porn to use Blu-Ray. I need a reference but if this is true, it certainly doesn't help their cause. When Porn went with VCR, well, you all know the rest of the story. Some say it was because of that decision we went with the inferior VCR format.

Tangent: DVD Special Features

In reply to: Porn industry choosing HD-DVD

A recruiter from Microsoft told this story off the record:

Apparently when Microsoft was looking into adding DVD functionality to Windows they needed to examine discs that were using some of the extended features (apparently DVD has a specification for multiple cameras and you can literally switch from one to another while staying on the timeline if the data is on the disc, but only adult discs were using this feature). However, Microsoft had a policy that Adult content was not permitted at work, so some employees had to take the discs home and do independent research. Probably most of them were single, but can you imagine trying to explain that to your girlfriend or spouse.

There's been a lot of chatter about this...

And I think it misses the fact that Blu-Ray's main vehicle is the PS3. While the VHS/Betamax thing was explicitly about movies - and explicit movies, ha! - now gaming has to taken as a factor in the equation. There were some sales figures that Blu-Ray already surpassed HD-DVD in sales for December because of the PS3.
