AVG 7.0 Free Edition
Lavasoft Ad-Aware 1.05
Windows Automatic Updates
Windows Firewall (off)
Even though Firefox is considered a more secure browser than IE, you still need protection from malware.
You have AVG 7 and Ad-Aware SE Personal which is good, and I suppose you update their definitions regularly. Also you update Windows regularly.
But you need;
A firewall. A computer without a firewall will be infected and/or attacked within 15 minutes of connecting to the internet. Whilst the Windows Firewall is better than none, you need a 3rd party firewall like ZoneAlarm free edition from http://www.zonelabs.com
Anti-spyware. I use Spybot Search & Destroy and SpywareBlaster, and keep them uptodate.
You also need to check if your Messenger Service is running. This is not MSN Messenger but a windows messaging service that is used for spamming and for sending ads.

and the rest of that thread for more details.

I would change my anti-virus to Avast (www.avast.com, it is also free). AVG doesn't recognize Mozilla products very well. It is more of a IE AV product.
You might also look for an extention called Adblock. Also Microsoft has a new product that is very good called Antispyware, it is in beta but reliable and free.

I agree, and you should also make sure you are running the updated firefox 1.0.1
Is a firewall really that good?
I'm a cable modem user and I'm trail running the McAfee Firewall program.
The first couple of days it alerted me to attempts to "get into my computer", but since, there's be no attempts. None.
Are people really trying to get into my computer?
I use Firefox, I have a Firewall, Anti-virus, I run Spybot and Ad-Aware. I have noticed that some sites use "extra windows" for some information to be displayed. Best Buy would be an example, if you choose to "compare" a couple of items it'll open those in a seperate window but within the same page, Firefox and pretty much any browser would see that as a pop-up, and block it. I set it to allow pop-ups from Best Buy and now when I go to the site I too get the pop-up ads. I am assuming you have a similar situation, and the answer to whether or not firefox is still blocking pop-ups is to simply go into the options and check to see if its on. While you are in there you can clear out the allowed sites and basically reset the blocker.
I tried the latest version of ZoneAlarm, and found that some graphics on Firefox web pages were not resolved, in some cases causing never-ending "waiting" and "transferring". There may be settings that correct this, but I didn't bother investigating. When I removed ZA the problem was fixed.
The original question about FF's pop up feature was answered above. This is concerning security in FF:
I changed browsers to FF in 10/04. It was love at first sight, but as another answer above stated, the "Zone Alarm" wasn't as charmed by FF as I was.
I opened my personal settings and turned them back to "DEFAULT" and the problem (blank page loads) stopped.
I could then go back and tighten up the security, one radio box at a time, until I was happy.
I use ZA and Network Associates Virus scan. I pay annual subscriptions, but together they have stopped several serious incursions onto my cyber turf.
I keep AVG closed so I'll get better download speeds on Bittorent
I cleared the Allowed Sites, and ran Ad-Aware. There are still popups.
I just installed Spybot. I thought it was incompatible with Ad-Aware.
Since you are stealing stuff with P2P (Bit Torrent in your case), you must pay through suffering pop-up advertising. All P2P software that I'm aware of infects the PC with pop-ups or phishing software. If you associate with criminals, you will get robbed in return.
Antivirus companies / programs don't stop programs you install. "Volunteer" freeware programs (like the laudable "Spybot - Search and Destroy") are only useful after you give up the file-stealing habits and need to go clean. They are always reacting to the latest exploits and so if you are actively using P2P you will be continuously re-infected. At some point your PC will become unbootable if you continue your current activities. (Assuming that your identity isn't stolen or the RIAA doesn't sue you and you continue to be able to use a PC at all.)
I'm using Bittorent to get anime fansubs. I'm thinking about using direct connect also, but after reading your message, I'm having second thoughts
Don't listen to that guy. He probably works for RIAA. Bittorrent is probably one of the most secure file sharing program out there, far more secure than any browser. Many direct two way TCP connections were established between various downloaders with help of trackers. The individual clients are validated by the tracker site first. It would be hard to tap. All incoming data is checked against the seed torrent file. Any mismatch results in the packets being deleted, and sender banned. This measure is supposed to ensure download consistancy and prevent corruption. Security is only a side effect. If someone sends over viruses, it will be identified as corrupted, and the data will be deleted immediately. Multiple Bittorrent downloads open many ports, but they should be all quite secure.
Most other modern peer to peer programs have similar file checking capacity, although to a much lesser extent.
Your problem is probably existing spyware/adware. Try scan for spyware/malware.
You may also want to go into:
Tools -> Options -> Web Features -> and set it for Load images for origionating website only.
This will block any images and banners that doesn't come from the site you're visiting, as well as the scripts that comes with them. the overwhelming majority of websites should load properly. But some may not, because they hot link images from different sites.
Btw, that guy is a moron. Don't listen to him.-_-
What OS do you use?
Firefox is designed to work best with Windows XP with SP1. Other older OSs may have problems...
Why would we believe an admitted expert thief like yourself? And no I don't work for the RIAA.
I have ZA, Norton & Spybot. All are good products that overlap each other. But since I have installed a wired router {D-Link} interference with my surfing have dropped to next to nothing due to the firewall that is built into the router. Once the set-up is done you smile all the way to everywhere.
