Popup error has occurred. . .

Feb 26, 2004 9:17AM PST

I have installed W98SE on all my older PCs, zero problems. Now with this new old one (P-III 450 MHz, Intel board, 128 Meg RAM), I get this error report on a file shdoc401.dll. This happens SOMETIMES on boot up, and when I click close, different items in the systray are closed. Sometimes it will close TaskManager, sometines SETI, sometimes whatever. I can click ok and it will run, no aparrant problems. Boot later and it happens again.

I have loaded 98 three times, gotten upgrades/updates (from IE5.5 to 6) three times, repaired IE three times (per some other web help suggestions). I can't narrow it down to any specific program.

I tried to rename the file and see what would happen, but it's running even in safe mode.

Any thoughts?

1. From what I've been able to find concerning the short reported error of Shdoc401.dll, there is no instant fix or correction.

I have loaded 98 three times, gotten upgrades/updates (from IE5.5 to 6) three times, repaired IE three times (per some other web help suggestions).

2. I note you stated "loaded . . ", but don't know if that means on a clean drive from scratch. I would also believe that repairing should fix the error, but who knows what else could be involved, if anything. You might read through Bob's thread on Browsers to see if using IERADICATOR, and then reinstalling IE, would correct this problem.

3. Reading through postings at Google_Group using the error Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module SHDOC401.DLL , it seems everything points to repairing.

Reloading = full reformat and install.

From what I'd read, referrals were made to failed updates. Last night I uninstalled (from Add/Remove) three updates and this morning it seems pretty stable. I did do what is described in the link at Administrivia, but I don't remember doing the last step. If it happens again I'll do everything.

Thanks.
