Poppies poppies! 61,000 hectares!

Mar 1, 2004 5:19PM PST

Hi, Yall.

http://news.ft.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=FT.com/StoryFT/FullStory&c=StoryFT&cid=1077690813112
"Afghan farmers defy efforts to curb heroin crop"

"President Karzai, in front of his entire cabinet, made it crystal clear that counter-narcotics is something he will make a fundamental element of the national security of the country," Mr Charles said.

"Poppy eradication is physically and politically difficult for a young government recovering from the aftermath of war," he added.

The State Department hopes to see a 10-15 per cent reduction in crop levels this year

The International Monetary Fund estimates that between 40 to 60 per cent of the country's GDP is derived from the opium trade. Afghanistan is the world's leading supplier of illicit opium, morphine and heroin.

Well isn't that special! That only leaves 55,900 hectares! We just hate those darn poppies! Yea, uh hu, sure. Sounds like we's gon'a get HIGH HIGH! Yes Sir!

Seems like everywhere we send the spooks in, there's guns and drugs. Why is that? Air America? Seriously, can't we do better than this?

Bob G

P. S. Who's got my damn Bob G user name? Give it up Charlie! Sad

Dial-up SUCKS big time! 3K!

This format kind'a sucks, too. Where the hell is "Search"? I came in through CNET. Is there a better lay-out somewhere?

The Work-Around...

Is this thread shut down? - Bob Gr

No. The moderators don't have any way to lock a thread. After about 7 replies, you will always see the "No further replies to this post will be accepted." and the "Reply to this Message" button will be missing...

But don't fret, we've been working around this problem for a very long time. In the URL addy for the post, you will see "http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6130-0" along with some other information. Simply change the 5208 to 5224, leaving everything else the same, then hit the Enter key and you will have a reply window to the post...

Hi, Bob.

Unfortunately, as the software comes out of the box it's "all or nothing" re: HTML. And the "all" allowed someone to essentially take over your computer from within the CNet message board. See the threads around this message on the Forum Feedback board for examples, though many were deleted...

DOH!... ~(_:(l) ...(It messed up my Homer face.)

Thanks Dave,

There is some irony there. Sounds like I missed out on some fun. Gives a new meaning to Flame when there's actual flames. OTOH, I can imagine the Help Whiz's getting tired of explaining stuff, and just going into peoples computers and fixing things.

I'm sure I'm not the first to notice, but it's a kind'a dry place 'round here the way things stand. Okay, I guess I'm up to speed on that and done bit(hing. (But I really would rather have a tree view on the opening page.) Thanks again.

Hi Cindi & all,
Mar 2, 2004 2:17AM PST

I moved back into my house 3 months ago after about 18 months of renting the house next door to my mother. My crazy sister moved her to an old folks home in Houston and I couldn't be madder. Sis just couldn't wait to get her hands on Mom's money and I couldn't explain it to Mom in detail 'cause it'd break her heart. Very sick! Bad feelings all around. I just hope being near by shows Sis that Mom is still around despite her stroke. We'll see what we see. Little hint for yall: Just because a Doctor prescribes it, doesn't mean you can't make a bad call.

I got 6 months of earthlink for 1/2 price. (Mention code: 1018752) I'm a little tight in the pocketbook right now.

As I've said, SE is a bit like an addiction and it never hurts to take a little break from an addiction. Particularly when you're in a bad state of mind. Anyway it's nice to be back online and it's nice to see all yall's shining faces! Happy

Unfortunate the rest of your news though.

Hmmm did you ever get that 3 way light switch fixec back a couple years ago? Can't say why, but somehow that always sticks with me when you come up. Wink

Hope things improve, but good to see ya.

Got'cha a shinny new M din't cha? P's & Q's peps. He'll take your face right OFF! Just kiddin. I've never seen you be anything but calm and polite. Congrats! (I guess. Wouldn't care for the job myself.) Wink

Right here, was reading this thread and saw me name.

Welcome back dude! I'm on dialup at home too but got DSL at work. I'll send you a copy of that new Linux distribution soon if you want. It's about due for Previwe 6, I think. Pretty slick too. Runs on a live-cd like Knoppix, or you can install it. I'm waiting until it's more done before installing.

Hey, if you're waiting I will too. Keep me tuned in. I can go across the alley and download stuff on their DSL.

I can't make head nor tails of this forum software. You can't even View / Source and find out what people are doing. Nobody is posting pictures. And just when I was feeling all comfy with my tags collection too. Konkel says square brackets. Hey!

If I was looking for chit-chat and no fancy stuff I'd get AIM!! You and young Lee Ripley, cue an old fart, will ya? I got the 'no further replies' trick. That's 'bout it.

I'd forgoten the pain (Oh, the pain, the pain.) of dial-up. @#$%!

Hey Bob - great to see you here!
Mar 2, 2004 11:22PM PST

Always enjoyed what you had to say 'back in the day' as my son would put it.

And believe it or not, dialup will NOT kill you. I am still on that myself - and until the cost of broadband comes down in my neck of the woods, on dialup I will stay. I know what it is like to 'live cheap'. Since 9/11, construction has taken a real hit so I am sure things have not been fun for you as an independent contractor. But recently I have been seeing more work here in Missouri so hopefully you will be seeing something similar in your home territory too.

I am not particularly thrilled with this new software either; on dialup it is excruciatingly slow to load. But beggars can't be choosers Happy so I won't complain too much.

Really glad to see you here.

Mar 4, 2004 9:42PM PST

I'm learning to keep one message coming in while I'm reading another. Lot'a clicking and scrolling. Spoiled rotten I guess.

Lately I've been doing more handyman work than real construction. There's a big paperwork gap to jump between just keeping myself working and crewing up for any sizable jobs. (And don't get me started on employer based health insurance!) Doing these little repair jobs gives me a pain. I want'a say "Get up off your dead... duff, and do it yourself!". I'm nicin' up peoples homes in ways I wouldn't ever think of doing for myself and they always want to cut the costs. I don't mean to whine. Keep on "tricking down" on me, PLEASE! Happy There's DSL in them thar hills!

What a puzzle Bob. I had hope when saw your name again you could finally explain it. Wink

The M is very new, and I'm rather shakey with it. The first thing I did was accidently deleted the announcement of my joining the ranks. Hopefully I'll gradually become an asset to the other moderators and the forum.

Unfortunately, modern pharmacology (and a certain political party) denies it to some of us who could really benefit from a bit. It's funny how it gets distributed, sometimes.
Happy

I've got faith in you, and not without REASON based on past experience. At worst, you can P somebody off. You won't change the orbit of the Earth no matter how bad you screw up. Anyways, thick-skin kind'a goes with the territory 'round here by definition. Heck, I myself go searching for something to be outraged about as a matter of course in here. Hopefully you won't have to call me out for throwing any tantrums, but if'n you do, I promise to go to my room peacefully.
Happy

Now, (with my nose properly brown in homage) you've got my addy, I believe. I've always been curious about the Backroom... Scuttlebutt?

Backroom? Sorry,I think that's like on SNL, where once you made it to hosting 5 times you could phone in the monologue. So as a neophyte, I've got a way to go. Wink

this poem in school. Wow how the picture of things changes over the decades
In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Hi, Mary Kay.

The world stands out on either side
No wider than the soul is wide;
Above the earth is stretched the sky --
No higher than the soul is high.
