Poppies poppies! 61,000 hectares!

Mar 1, 2004 5:19PM PST

Hi, Yall.

http://news.ft.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=FT.com/StoryFT/FullStory&c=StoryFT&cid=1077690813112
"Afghan farmers defy efforts to curb heroin crop"

"President Karzai, in front of his entire cabinet, made it crystal clear that counter-narcotics is something he will make a fundamental element of the national security of the country," Mr Charles said.

"Poppy eradication is physically and politically difficult for a young government recovering from the aftermath of war," he added.

The State Department hopes to see a 10-15 per cent reduction in crop levels this year

The International Monetary Fund estimates that between 40 to 60 per cent of the country's GDP is derived from the opium trade. Afghanistan is the world's leading supplier of illicit opium, morphine and heroin.

Well isn't that special! That only leaves 55,900 hectares! We just hate those darn poppies! Yea, uh hu, sure. Sounds like we's gon'a get HIGH HIGH! Yes Sir!

Seems like everywhere we send the spooks in, there's guns and drugs. Why is that? Air America? Seriously, can't we do better than this?

P. S. Who's got my damn Bob G user name? Give it up Charlie! Sad

Dial-up SUCKS big time! 3K!

This format kind'a sucks, too. Where the hell is "Search"? I came in through CNET. Is there a better lay-out somewhere?

Welcome Back Bob!!!

I highly doubt that Charlie registered with Bob G. That seems like a pretty common user name combo. Since you were late to the party, someone in one of the other forums is probably already using it. You might look for someone named Bob or Robert. Their last name may just start with "G"...

This format is as good as it gets. Change is extremely slow. We had to work around visited links marking for quite some time, even though that was probably one of the easiest things to fix. I doubt we will ever see a Search function in here. I hope for the best, but expect very little. For sanity's sake, that is probably the best option for everyone...

Hi, Blake.

>>I doubt we will ever see a Search function in here<<
My guess is we'll see it before Easter -- Lee's given increasingly strong hints, and now statements, in the Feedback Forum that search is "coming soon."

Hi ya Blake.

You're right. I thought blaming Charley would be a little funny. I'll check the other Bob G out when / IF Search ever shows up.

Visited links marking isn't working worth a dang for me.

You been keeping the "tooth & fang" bunch honest while I've been away? Happy

Visited links marking isn't working worth a dang for me. - Bob Gr

For a while, we had to change the browser settings in order to see the visited links. But that screwed up all normal and fully operational sites. So we had to switch back and forth. Now, the visited links work for most, but many of us lose the visited links once we shut down the browser. So it is still a real PITA...

When they gang up, it can be trying. Since I now expect the dog pile most of the time, it really doesn't bother me much. Since it is now easier for new members to find SE, there are more Progressive-minded people finding their way here. So the near Conservative monopoly in SE seems to be crumbling slowly. It's only a matter of time before the pendulum swings back to a healthier political balance... Happy

Recently someone, I think Jonah, posted a neat site where you had to find your way out of a room by finding objects that would help you out of the door. If I find it, I'll post it here.

Here are a couple of links, without testing them (and even then LOL) I can't tell now which are real old and which are new.

http://www.bigideafun.com/penguins/arcade/spaced_penguin/default.htm

http://www.flingthecow.com/flash/default.asp

An old favorite, I love this one. Links on that page for many more games

http://www.flasharcade.com/game.php?chickenandeggs

A chruch sign generator, this one is fun!

http://www.churchsigngenerator.com/

AND you missed Christmas at SE, but you were remembered. I don't know, Bob, this may really strain your connection but I'm on dial up also and it loads pretty fast.

The very best wishes to your mom, Bob.

I think I posted penguin first, and I've got two versions of flingthecow. Penguin is a GREAT one! You can put him in orbit, you know?

CHICKEN AND EGGS is only 43 KB. I love it! 54 points. Long time ago, before I started saving .swf files, there was a similar game with babies called "catch the poop". It was in a greeting card that I sent to a pregers friend. Happy I can't find it again. I've looked and looked. I got chicken now though. One day I'll have a whole CDs worth.

Aaaawwww! You went all out for Christmas. Ain't that nice? I think that's GREAT! Thank you, and Merry (belated) Christmas to you too.

Your friend Bob

I ran across it in bookmarks by accident. You need FlashPlayer and it take a while to load. But it's fun. If you get stuck finding all the clues just post for help, we have several experts on the board now.

http://www.datacraft.co.jp/takagism/index_e.html

Here is a quick loading game and if you're really quick and coordinated you may last more than half a second. Like I did.

The blocks thing is a java script. I haven't figured out how to copy the parts and make them work together. Dead in 0.38 sec..

It looks like I'm missing maybe 3 things in the red room. Not a good puzzle before work. I'll try again tonight. (Snaged a copy so's I won't have to load it again.)

I love the Church Sign Maker. There WILL be some emails. Happy

As to the poppies? They sure are pretty Happy

Maybe we should just let it be. After all, what's worse? Opium or the human slave trade that has evolved out of other poor countries in turmoil?

From what I gather, Afghanistan doesn't have much in the way of natural resources. But heck, any sort of Oil trade/pipeline or other such industry development is out of the question for the "No War for Oil" conspiracy mongers!

Hi Ev. How's tricks?

Listen, I just don't buy that it's gotta be heroin or slaves. We can do better! And, you know, the Vulcans would be idiots to drop in for a visit until we do.

AIR, LBJ wanted to build a huge hydro-electric system in Nam and drop refrigerators instead of bombs. If Uncle Ho would just (Catch 22) "like us". Let's just see if we can keep any more peoples from hating us so.

I have a personal grudge against heroin, as you may recall. 61,000 hectares is too much heroin even for Olie's Air America boys.

Udder dan dat, Hi Howdy! Happy

Hey Bob,

Tricks is tricks. Still doing the teaching thing. Don't know what my current experiences say about the future of the medical profession tho. This year I am teaching Nursing majors while last semester my students were mostly pre-Meds. The Nurse wannabes are far more serious and dedicated. The course material might not be as challenging, but I'm getting a bit concerned about the general lack of dedication of those pre-Meds!

As to heroine and slavery, we could do better? Well, we have on the slavery front. The slavery in this world goes on right under the noses of the UN with little even said. Dunno that we are really responsible for everything around the globe. The hue and cry of imperialism often accompanies any attempts to help. Sigh Sad

I hope your Mom is in a good home. It's always a tough decision, but I know many who have done remarkably better in such settings. Don't underestimate the power of her new opportunities to socialize. Maybe she can start some food fights to scare up some fun Wink

Welcome back, Bob!

I agree with Blake that "Bob G" is a common enough combo that some other Bob probably just beat you to it. Nop better way to come in than CNet, but you can bookmark, of course. A hint about long links -- they "bleed" into the right margin, and take the rest of the post over with them, making it hard to read. You can use the following template to avoid the problem (I spit it out using the PC Mag utility "robotype"): {url=site.com}text{/url} Just turn the curly { brackets to square [ ones.

Not much html works with this software, huh? - Bob Gr

When we first started posting here, we had FULL HTML functionality. It was nice. We could post Flash movies, change background and font colors, format text, etc. But some felt that was too dangerous and there was a lot of concern. So HTML functionality was completely disabled... Sad

We are a dangerous bunch, aren't we. Not just to Western Society, but...

I almost wish you hadn't told me that. I thought the forum software was just kind'a weak. Hobbled on purpose to protect us from ourselves. What an ugly idea THAT is. Somebody needs to get over themselves. Bad enough that half the buttons I'm used to are gone, and the tree view of the full forum... Cindi can't even put a siggie up. Oh well, half a rubber biscuit is better than no biscuit. I guess. We'll see.

It's not just that it was perceived as being dangerous; people were abusing it and posting some nasty stuff. I don't remember the details but I remember there was good reason for most HTML to be disabled.

Hi, Bob.

>>Is it a posters choice whether to allow replies or not? I don't see a button. <<
The software doesn't officially allow more than eight "layers" of reply to a single message -- then you see the missing button and the black message that no more replies are allowed. But you can circumvent that by changing the "5208" in the "http://reviews.cnet.com/5208..." in your browser's location window (at the top) to ...5224... and hitting "Enter" while your cursor is in that window.

>>I also don't see a remove button. Do I have to send a request to the mods to remove a post of mine? <<
In a word, yes -- use the alert button (be sure you're logged in so we know you're really the one making the request) and we'll take out the message for you.

I don't think there were any bad apples. I think it was the fear of bad apples that convinced them to disable HTML. There was fear of browser and web hijacking, fear of viruses, trojans, and worms, fear of fear. You know how it goes. We are supposed to be afraid of everything...

The HTML features were nice while they lasted...
