Pop-ups gone - Icons on websites gone too - help...!!!

by andasolo33 / October 30, 2004 2:51 PM PDT

Hello,

A few months back pop-ups were driving me crazy.
While doing research on the web I found a site with a "list" of links that when copied to a "certain" (yeah, I forgot the location of this .txt file) location on my computer would make all/most pop-ups stop. It worked...Problem is most websites do no longer display any of their icons / .gif files either and I have been left with a stripped-down version of webpages. I have tried to find the original website to "undo" the list as I am now using yahoo's pop-up blocker but I can't find it...
Anybody know how I can regain the full websites and undo this cursed list?
Thanks!
C.E.

Mark, good evening.

I tried your suggestion(s) but unfortunately that does not seem to do it.
IE and Outlook work fine - it's just that instead of seeing complete websites I do not get any of the icons and .gif's.
Netscape browser works just fine...

Thanks though.

Hosts file?
by Steven Haninger / October 31, 2004 10:05 AM PST

Does the term ring a bell? Windows/System32/Drivers/etc/. Look in there for one named "hosts". Rename it such as by adding a number or extension such as .old and see if your images are back. Some write utils to place the file in the correct folder so you don't have to. This is a text file and the sites in the list are redirected to nul (a black hole. Good luck.

Awesome! Thanks Steven.

In reply to: Hosts file?

That was exactly it.

So, for all of you who are curious and want to try another way of blocking pop-ups:
-Search for "hosts"
-on your hard drive you should see a file names "hosts under Windows/System32/Drivers/etc/
-open this file with "notepad"
-after the
127.0.0.1 localhost
part copy any links you want to block (such as for example):
#put in by me
127.0.0.1 ebay.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 banners.ebay.com
127.0.0.1 a248.e.akamai.net
127.0.0.1 i.i.com.com
127.0.0.1 a868.g.akamai.net
127.0.0.1 accipiter.speedera.net
127.0.0.1 i.cmpnet.com
127.0.0.1 img.cmpnet.com
-hit save
-pop-ups from these links will be blocked (so will icons and/or .gif's)

Anyhow - unless you can't find a pop-up blocker or unless you have a really good reason for doing this - don't do it.

Thanks again!

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
