Same here...
Oct 5, 2005 3:20AM PDT

It only popped up in the Computer Help forum, and was centered horizontally at the bottom of my browser window. I don't know what the survey was, but it's the same ad I've received from Yahoo before, but from a different URL. It didn't seem to want to go away, and stayed at the bottom of the window as I scrolled, so I used Adblock to remove it. Now curiosity is getting to me, but I can't seem to get it to come back. Confused

Random?
Oct 8, 2005 4:15PM PDT

I hope not. Otherwise, your email will be flooded with a call for help.
John, ten megs max each email to you? Purchase some more memory. I have another 512m ready to install, bought from Newegg.com. Reasonable at $87.00. Purchase some for yourself for the up-coming emails.

OFF SUBJECT:
By the way, newegg.com is a very good company. Ships out products from CA, usually received within three days. Very good place to shop for just about everything from hardware to software. Nice telephony skills also.
Like them a lot after three years dealing with them.
Buy.com is another really good place to puchase along with your own favorites.

It's just an e-mail limit...
Oct 9, 2005 12:50AM PDT

All e-mail providers limit the size of each e-mail and how much you can store...it has nothing to do with your computer specs (although I sometimes wish it did). While almost all providers cap you off at 10MB e-mails (sending and receiving), Google wins most over with 2.5GB of storage. Yahoo comes in second with 1GB, leaving Hotmail and Adelphia chugging along a few miles behind with 25MB of storage a piece. If you want more than that yo have to pay for something along the lines of Yahoo Plus, which allows you to send/receive 20MB e-mails and store up to 2GB of mail.

As far as newegg goes, I've also found them to be very good, although it's rare when I stray from the weekly circulars and a local store. I simply prefer to actually see and touch what I'm purchasing, not just look at a picture of it. That's partially because of bad experiences, such as buy.com forgetting I had already placed, and paid for, an order, as well as BestBuy reciving my RAM a week late, then losing it in their store the day I was to pick it up. That's not to say I dont order products anymore, but I place their customer service (aka complaint) number on speed dial, just in case.

John, Thanks,
That info helps to send out to others. Generally, I send low resolution files with email. If someone wants to have a high resolution file, I will upload it to them later as a high res file.
Nice info on your part.

I've seen those too on our site... I guess they are random..
Oct 5, 2005 10:08AM PDT

and put there to get user's to submit feedbacks for our site.

It's looks like a third party survey group... not too concerned, this is probably the best way our company can get feedback from you all.

Received several of these...
Oct 7, 2005 6:01AM PDT

I consider these an annoyance a best and intrusion at the worst. If given a one time chance to bail out it would not be so bad... but being a continual pest is a little over the top.

Just my opinion!

This is Bad.
Oct 7, 2005 12:31PM PDT

After visiting SE, I got hit by this Browser Hijack which in Netscape redirected all my tabbed pages to http://amchquestionmarket.com/ In addition there was a constant stream of unknown data being stolen from my computer and I hit the instant off switch to stop it since it bogged my computer down. I'm just glad I still use dialup or there's no telling how much private files might have uploaded to some other place. Right now in Netscape I'm running with javascript off to load a page, turning it on ONLY to send in a post like this, and then immediately disabling it again. I'll probably have to put an entry into a HOST file to solve this problem unless CNET gets it fixed, and quick.

This is a Browser Hijack, and may be a data stealer too.

James, Why wouldn't you post this to the Virus Forum also. This thing sounds really nasty.
What you are saying is that Hijack is on the CNET?
How prone are the members or visitors?
PC and Mac. Or just PC? Why on CNET?
Where else is it lurking?

Oct 7, 2005 12:30AM PDT

Is this one coming from www.digitalmediapass.com?

I started getting them on other sites as well and it took AdBlock in Mozilla and a couple of entries into my HOSTS file to stop them.

Mark, that's nice for you wizzards that are light years ahead of me and most of us all.
Mark, what is the latest with pop-ups and the problems?
PC pest?
I am on a Mac. Can't see any problem so far. PC pest only? Where was it generated from?
Lampie told me I will get the pop-up crap. So far, not for me. Rick has it as well as others on this forum.
Will CNET be able to deal with it?
Lee said that he is aware of it. Not too much news since.

Off subject: Mark, How the heck do you have over eight thousand posts to these forums? I asked Bob Proffitt this same question last year; Do you Mods ever sleep?
Keep up the good work.

The survey's still around...
Oct 12, 2005 1:28AM PDT

I browsed the forums yesterday using IE to see if it was gone and ended up receiving the survey request three times, with a source of http://ad.insightexpress.com/adserver/images/boxquestionmark.gif. Clicking the link in a browser that doesn't block insightexpress will let you see just the gif. When it appears on Cnet it maintains its place in your browser window, moving accordingly as you scroll. For me, in Firefox, clicking the 'X' wouldn't work (it would move to another part of the screen, then random parts of it would disappear, leaving a choppy mess), forcing me to kill it. It seems to work in Opera and IE, though I've since blocked it there for being annoying. Aside from its sudden presence (the Cnet survey used to actually come from Cnet and in a 'standard' popup window) and stubborness, was/is there anything else wrong with it?

the kind of thing that countless hours are spent on in the virus and security forum, trying to remove and keep off our systems. Then we get infested here at the forums.
And people wonder where the conspiriarist get their ideas?

Ezrider, Is it a real virus to infect us all or just a crap virus lurking on the CNET Forums?
I am running Mac OS10.
Just saw it after reading the latest email from Lee Koo. Went to the Newbies forum to check out a post. Never say this pop-up until responding to the Newsletter.
No wonder Lee went to Mexico. Can't stand the heat at CNET? What are the technisions doing about this??
John (mouseorama) was right-on about this light blue panel popping-up.
I did not have pop-up activated with Mozilla Firefox. Forgot to activate it because of a recent re-install.
Kind of a pain in the BUTT don't you think?

(NT) New Macintosh Virus lurking in CNET?

A: i use firfox (xp sp2) and clicking the "X" gets rid of it

B: it's NOT a virus, you have a problem with your programs that is not connected with the pop-up survey (and btw, the script problem mentioned in Feedback isn't about the survey pop-up)

C: "infested"? that implies that your computer acted differently AFTER seeing the survey pop-up?

Infested to me means I even saw that popup. The irritant is it was here at these forums, for the reasons I previously stated. I have always found the old saying is fairly accurate, "Where there's smoke there's FIRE"

Jonah, Kevin, EZ...
Oct 18, 2005 3:35AM PDT

I'm not sure why, but clicking the "X" wouldn't get rid of the survey for me. It would move from it's normal position at the bottom center of my browser window to the center left position, covering up the "Other popular forums" section, then "stick" there. Mousing over the links to other forums would clear those specific squares of the survey request, leaving a choppy mess. Since that's not widespread, I'm assuming it's due to the plugins or adware/popup/script blockers I have installed.

As far as a virus or an infection goes, there isn't one. The survey may be annoying, but it doesn't contain spyware or a virus, and doesn't cause harm to your computer. The only things Cnet installs onto your computer are temp files and tracking cookies, and even that you can control. Thus, I don't believe the problems you're having are related to the viewing of the survey. Perhaps Pete can help you fix whatever issue you are encountering?

Reacted differently
Oct 18, 2005 3:43PM PDT

Jonah, Yes. I still do not know why. Maybe another problem. I cannot open any of my apps in system X or Classic, OS9.2. All apps: Mirosoft Office, any Adobe program, Quark etc. Kind of a bummer right now.

Jonah, the good news is the fact that I have an IT person coming to my house sunday to do a clean install on my Mac computer. Planed that last month, thank God!
Will install the new OSX 10 Tiger and one by one reinstall my apps and other stuff.
Also purchased some needed hardware upgrades, memory, etc.

I really do not know if this weird Pop-Up was responsible for it or not. My first thought was a new Mac Virus? Not!!!
Oh well, Halloween is fast approaching! Spookey stuff out there!!!
