Question

Poor WiFi signal

Mar 3, 2018 9:35AM PST

My daughter and I live in the same apt building its a turn of the century two-story brick building, she is on the main floor in the back and I am on the second floor in front, She has high-speed internet through a local cable company with the router set up in her place. I share the service via WiFi it is much slower than her service and that's fine for my needs. The problem is she recently upgraded her service and was sent a new router with all the newest technology now when I try accessing WiFi the speeds are all over the place they can jump from broadcasting over 100 Mbps to 1 Mbps. I am experiencing my browser freezing and pages never loading as it took to long or loading as text only. Is there a signal booster or range extender that would help resolve the problems. If yes, which brand and or type would you suggest?

From what I can see, the router should be looked at. These buildings of their size should not give Wifi a problem unless the walls are plastered or made of concrete. Given the degree of speed slowness, tests on the router need to be done by your ISP. They will be able to pinpoint the source of the speed issue you are having with your Wifi connection to the modem/router. Also, you could try repositioning the router to a closer location to your computer and the computer of your daughter.

For a check can you add another device to the same Lan?

For me determine whether the issue is your ISP or your PC, I would request you to connect another device on the Lan. If possible and done give me a heads up.
