General discussion

Poor Sony

Sep 22, 2006 3:18AM PDT

Saw on Google News today that Sony cut the announced price of the upcoming PS3 by 20% in Japan due to vocal consumer and media complaints that the system is too expensive (to 49,980 yen, or about $430 for the cheapest version). In the meantime, the lower model will also get an HDMI port.

Guess Sony had to tell that old bottom line that it's gonna hurt a little MORE; naturally, Sony's stock was trading DOWN on the news. Wonder what'll happen with the U.S. market; Sony (so far) hasn't released any pricing reduction information here so far. I'd say to better you chances, all you PS fans better start firing off some nasty emails to Sony if you want them to lower the price here as well.

One has to wonder
Nov 1, 2009 1:14AM PDT

One has to wonder why it is you felt the need to revive a 3 year old thread to make your one and only post (so far) on these forums.

I really do not understand the mindset of people like you. How does someone buying a 360 or a Wii in any way cheapen the experience you get from your PS3? Seriously. Do games run a little bit slower every time someone buys a Wii or 360? Are they somehow less enjoyable because someone you've never met buys a different console? Seriously. What is it that is so bad about someone buying a different console from your preference? In what way does it cheapen, or lessen the overall experience for you? I just cannot wrap my head around this concept, so maybe you can explain it to me.

Moron? Wow thats not nice.
Sep 27, 2006 1:04AM PDT

Well gee thanks for calling me a moron. You fanboys are crazy lol. Anyway listen..I dont want HD movie playing as an optional add-on. I want it with the system...is that really that hard to understand from my post. Also bugs? what bugs? its not out yet. As to your statement about waiting for the PS3 when the 360 has been out a year..well the reality is Ive been having a great time with my PS2. Now that Im upgrading my TV I figuered it would be a suitable time to start considering an HD capable game system. Finally while I understand many of you like to comment and speculate as to how bad this is financially to Sony, why do you care? If its too much for you then simply do not purchase it. Its like some of you take some hidden pleasure in predicting financial ruin or a corperate entity. *WEIRD*..Guys there is this thing called sports..where you can cheer for your home team...check it out its far more rewarding that this.

when did sports come into this?
Sep 27, 2006 2:34AM PDT

I happen to be an avid fan of sports (playing/watching) and I do not wish Sony to go under financially because more competition in the video game market benefits everyone.

I know that the PS3 is not released yet nor has anyone been able to test one outside of Sony...but you have to admit that with the current problems with the BR players that are on the market, it is not a good omen for the cheap BR players they are putting in the PS3s.

As far as hardware failure potential, use some common sense. Brand new processor technology that no one has ever coded to + cheap Blu-ray player = high potential for a large failure rate. You cannot just hide your head in the sand and say everything will be ok when Sony is pushing out such new technology that has never been used before.

Umm....yeah.
Sep 27, 2006 3:54AM PDT

The sports reference was thrown in to compare how ''SOME'' people get behind a certain manufacurer (like a sports team) and well trash talk anything that isnt that. Its pitiful and I recommend those people get a life..and take up some other topic where trash talking would be more appropriate.

As far as BP, new hardware, and ''risk'' taking is concerned, well thats the dangerous world of consumer electronics. Thats the nature of new technology...if that is going to stop you from investing in new technology then you should not bother buying anything. An extreme view ofcourse but it would make sense if I were to base my purchases on such feelings. Im not putting my head in the sand..Im thinking about buying somthing new and potentially very entertaining. Botton line is...that IF is breaks they will fix it. Just like they did when my PS2 stopped working. Thats just not a very scary proposition to me.

Agreed
Sep 27, 2006 6:15AM PDT

I made a similar sports reference in another post. And it's true there is no guarantee that anything you buy is going to be 100% reliable. Meat spoils, cotton shrinks, buttons stick, pages are missing.....I could go on forever. The point is that you buy these things anyway. I think the PS3 is the most exciting console ever!! I've been playing games for 22 years and I'm only 27. This system is going to be a monster capable of things we've only wished for in gaming. Just my opinion, but Sony's getting my $600

like i said...

Like I said in my previous post, base your movie player decisions on the movies you want to see not on the video games you want to play. Base your video game decisions on the video games you want to play. I would not buy a PS3 for movies but I would buy it for games if it had games that I wanted to play. I would buy an HD-DVD player if it had movies I wanted to see. It's not really that hard to see. I mean, I own a 500 dollar HD-DVD player, a 2200 dollar HDTV, and about 1000 dollars in HD-DVDs. remember, HD-DVDs and Blu-Ray disks are not cheap but they are nice. i just bought my FIRST ps2 last month. i don't play games much but i watch a lot of movies, thus i got a good movie player and an older model game machine. it's all based on what's important to you.

typical_guy Thanks for your inpuy. My replies werent really in reference to what you had said. Your statement was the most sensable of the bunch. I suppose Ill just take one step at a time. TV TIME! MWAHAHA!

One other thing
Sep 28, 2006 9:36PM PDT

If you chose to go with Blu-Ray because the PS3 seems like the best "value", be careful when purchasing movies. Review the back of the Blu-Ray boxes. The movies that use the MPEG-2 codex (most of the movies released to date) are not getting good reviews. The newer movies being released are using the VC-1 codex and those are the ones you want to buy. Almost all reviews of the first Blu-Ray releases have been terrible and indicate that the MPEG-2 versions look barely better than regular DVDs. So just be sure not to buy the ones encoded with MPEG-2. It tells you this stuff on the back of the box. The fifth element is one of the worst looking Blu-Ray disks out based on reviews so I'd recommend not buying it unless they release a newer version with VC-1 codex used.

Initial batch BD picture quality.
Sep 29, 2006 12:14AM PDT

Thanks for the heads up, I had read that in Sound and Vision. They scored the picture poorely..supposidly they are re-release the 5th element BR disc cause the first batch was so bad. On the bright side most of the BD discs are said to have incredible audio. Anyway back to the PS3...I guess we will all just have to wait and see. One question though..alot of people are complaining about the systems "slow" disc speed. How will this affect movie playback?

slow disk speed
Sep 29, 2006 9:05PM PDT

Well, I can tell you only based on my HD-DVD player. I own the $500 toshiba HD-DVD player (first gen). It takes several min. to get started and going. Once it's going it's fine. I assume that the PS3 and BR playback will be the same. Most of the delay is related to booting up (the PS3/blu-ray players/hd-dvd players are computers). After the initial bootup slowness, there is usually a delay while it reviews your disk (for copy protection). Following this, there is very little problem. I have noticed NO movie playback issues and after the movie gets started it's smooth.

ps3 blu-ray speculations

How do we know that the ps3 has a cheap Blu-ray player in it. Nobody has seen it in action. When the ps2 came out with a DVD player for its time, I thought it had great play back considering DVD was new technology and price back in 2000

does it really matter?
Sep 30, 2006 12:33PM PDT

It only really matters for people that are buying the PS3 to watch movies. If you do not have an HDTV then you might as well not even buy Blu-Ray movies since they cost twice as much as regular dvds and will not look twice as good on your SDTV.

flashback
Sep 27, 2006 5:29AM PDT

Sony is very good at providing sort of an all in one breakthrough machine. Now this is just my personal experience so take it with a grain of salt. The PS2 was the answer to my problems. I wanted a next-gen game console and I wanted a DVD player. As we all should know that at the initial release of the PS2 a stand alone DVD player with comparable options was around the same price range as a PS2. People complain about the price of everything(me included) but if you really want to buy a PS3 you are gonna stand in lijne and shell out however much Sony asks you to. I mean people were paying 600,700,800 and up for slimline ps2's and xbox360's just becasue they were hard to find. Keep in mind its a capitalistic world we live in and you will get charged as much as you will pay for. the same theory applies to selling your old car start high then work your way down.

- Collapse -
Well, that's all kinda subjective
Sep 28, 2006 10:13AM PDT

Personally, I'd rather pay as CHEAP as possible BEFORE I put the thing on eBay. Wink

As you said, it's a capitalistic world we live in...gotta max out that profit where we can...
