Polling Intervals

Hi all - Im new to the forum so be gentle..

Can someone tell me what they consider to be best practice for SNMP polling rates on a LAN with about 60-70 ethernet switches...

Response times polled every 2 minutes are fine, but full blown stat polling of every interface on every node can cause more problems than they solve.

Im using Solarwinds Engineers Edition if that helps.

Should be far longer. Here's why.

If we are monitoring for failures then we only need to look every so often. Hourly might be fine. There are some that need to demo the feature so you crank it down to a few seconds for the demo.

Remember that your polling could go over a bridge to some ISDN line and your polling can add data transit costs.
