Poll: How do you refill your printer ink/toner?

Oct 26, 2007 3:29AM PDT

How do you refill your printer ink/toner?

I buy ink cartridges/toner made by my printer manufacturer. (Why not other methods?)

I buy off-brand ink/toner cartridges that are compatible with my printer. (How has that worked out?)

I use refillable ink/toner cartridges and refill them myself. (How has that worked out?)

Other (Please tell us what it is.)

Canon Pixma IP4000: I refill the color cartridges
Oct 28, 2007 5:29PM PDT

with ink bought through Inkclub, but only 3 or 4 times max for each, then I buy a new set of Canon cartridges and start over again. Found that it is not a good idea to refill the black cartridges, especially not the one used for photo's (there is a double size black cartridge for documents in B&W, which you can refill once or twice). For the black photo cartridge I use Motif cartridges, which are cheaper but give very good quality prints. Of these I also use about 3 and then again an original Canon one. Found that photo prints go very 'cold' colored (with too much magenta and cyan) if you refill too often or even if you only refill the small black one once, but this way the quality is very good, and I save a lot of money too.

Photo black is different than regular black

I'm not surprised, regular black in a Canon is pigmented. Photo Black is dye ink, so it will print and absorb differently into the paper.

ink toner

Don't judge a cartridge just by its price; the number of pages it can print is just as important. That figure will change depending on how much ink you use on a page; the industry-standard is 5% coverage per page for each color. Some companies make yield information available on the Web along with other printer specifications; others will provide it if you ask. FOR MORE DETAILS http://freephotopaper.com/ink_store.htm

How do you refill your printer ink/toner

I buy HP genuine brand inkject cartridges for all my HP PhotoSmart printers. Friends who use generic or proprietary (office supply box stores) refilled cartridges, especially colored, have very muddled results. It is an added expense to insure I get the results I expect.

databazaar.com for me
May 20, 2008 6:06AM PDT

Instead of the $70-80 HP OEM toner cartridges for my HP laserjet 1018, I buy them from databazaar for $20/25. The HPs are supposed to get 2000 pages per cartridge; I counted the number of reams that I used up with these refurbs, and I got 2000. No thanks, HP. I noticed no difference whatsoever between the printouts with the original cartridge (that came with the printer) and the refurbs that I got from databazaar. Granted, this is a b/w printer and I only do documents. Not sure if there would be any difference with photos--I doubt it.
