Do you own an HDTV?
Jun 8, 2007 12:50PM PDT

No. I don't spend enough time watching TV to justify the expense. As soon as my current boob tube breaks, I will forgo the opportunity to replace it. The only reason I have one at all is that my wife and 10-year-old son insist on having one. They seem to think that they have time to waste. I don't. When I have free time, I prefer to read books or take a nap. Most television programming is for idiots, and the good stuff rarely appears. If I want to see the good stuff, I can always download it and watch it on my PC monitor.

Which type to purchase is my problem. There is so much to consider that it is hard to decide. Besides, who wants to make a mistake when you are spending that kind of money! Any suggestions?

PANASONIC HDTV
Jun 8, 2007 1:33PM PDT

We own a 42" Panasonic. We liked the Pioneer Elite the best, but couldn't afford it. We waited until our beautiful old Sony died and then we went HD. We bought ours in December for $1400. When my mom's Sony died in April, we went out to get her the same Panasonic and the price had gone down to $1100. The price reduction due to Panasonic coming out with their next model. Technology moves so fast. Models are almost obsolete before you leave the driveway of the store!

42" Samsung plasma screen.

I love the picture and it is visible at almost 180 degrees. It hangs on the wall and I have the audio going through a Yamaha amp with Klipsch 7.1 surround sound. I could never go back.

EDTV
Jun 8, 2007 2:18PM PDT

I have a Panasonic plasma 42" EDTV.Got it a few years ago and use a Denon avr something with component cables.DVDs are awesome.Anyone that comes over and sees it playing a DVD is stunned it's not HD,even those that have HD.According to the paperwork this thing(EDTV)will produce 720i/p and 1080i if I replace the board with a hdmi board.Looking at HD in the future just not now, before I purchase something new i'll try the board swap and see what happens.Next one will also be a Panasonic or Pioneer.Haven't seen an LCD I like yet although I have a 20" Funjai in the bedroom with component cable and picture is nice, some weird ghosting with colors between pictures though.I am a firm believer in plasma.

Yep a Syntax Oleiva 427V. I only paid about $380 for it and it has all the features I wanted in a hdtv. HDMI, component, vga input, 27" thin LCD screen, HD tuner, and 720p-1080i output. Its not as nice as my brothers 50" Panasonic Plasma, but I like it.

I have a Panasonic Plasma Viera TH-50PX600A
Jun 8, 2007 3:04PM PDT

I had an LG plasma HDTV....great picture until the lines of blown pixels started to appear (just after it ran out of warranty oddly enough). I now have a 127cm (50") Panasonic Plasma Viera TH-50PX600A HDTV with built in digital tuner. It is great for normal free to air digital reception but satelite pay tv is less than impressive. I dont thing that satalite or cable pay tv is broadcast in high def however.I would recommend getting HDTV but the cost could be prohibitive for some. They are becoming more affordable all the time though. Note however my warning....NEVER BUY ANY THING FROM LG.

HD TV
Jun 8, 2007 3:10PM PDT

No I don't have one.
I won't get one until the standards are sorted out and until the prices come down. The price of the monitors and the content.
The only brand I won't buy is a Sony because I don't want to support their company (due to the way they currently treat customers).

Jun 8, 2007 3:28PM PDT

I have had a 57" Hitachi Ultravision HD CRT R.P. for a few years and I have loved it. But now I'm moving to a new house and the place for the TV wont hold that big of a TV, so I have to downsize to a 50". Sad The TVs I'm looking at are the Panasonic and Pioneer plasmas and the Samsung LCD.

Buy something "Made in Japan"
Jun 8, 2007 3:39PM PDT

Japanese made Panasonic, Hitachi, Pioneer are all really great for Plasma TV's. Avoid those made in China or Korea.

WARNING: Don't, whatever you do buy LG. It will look great but will not last and you will regret it.

Although I am not a fan of it, the only reason why you need HDTV would be for hocky. 1/2 the time you can't see the puck on regular cable but everything else is fine ya don't need it.

HDTV Set Purchase
Jun 8, 2007 4:01PM PDT

I work in TV and I see it all day long! When I get home, TV is the last thing I want to see or do. I have two excellent analog sets that should last well past the February, 2009 date for the shut off of analog transmission. If one or both quit before then I will be forced to make a HDTV purchase. But not until then.

Early Adopter to HDTV
Jun 8, 2007 5:56PM PDT

I bought my HDTV in January 2000 ... Sony KV36XBR400. I could not wait to say good-bye to the horrid system called NTSC! I always thought it looked like crap ... HDTV made it even look worse!

Once the majority of television programming was broadcast in HDTV my motto became ... if it is not in HDTV then I will not waste my time watching it.

I hope to soon upgrade my HDTV to be able to watch movie rentals in HDTV on HD DVD or Blu-ray, which requires a set with HDMI inputs. In the mean time I try to watch as many movies as possible in HDTV via Bell ExpressVu's PPV HD channels.

16:9 ... the only way to watch sports and movies!
Jun 8, 2007 6:11PM PDT

I have to add my total hatred for the 4:3 format of NTSC. Sports and movies are meant to be viewed on a wide screen ... 4:3 just does not hack it. If you are watching sports you miss part of the action. If you are watching movies, either you miss part of the picture or you have to suffer through pan and scan. How stupid is that!

Do I plan to get an HDTV?
Jun 8, 2007 6:22PM PDT

No, certainly not yet! Why? well, I enjoy watching TV - sometimes - but I don't like the set to dominate the room. My present LCD TV sits quietly in the corner, has superb picture quality, crystal clear images (largely, I grant you, because it is a small screen), does everything I want it to, is connected to the satellite system, is connected to my audio system for improved sound, and does not dominate the room. I am a bit of a technofreak but there IS more to life than TV! When they produce a HDTV which is of a manageable size and does not cost an arm, a leg and a torso then I'll reconsider!

Panasonic DLP set
Jun 8, 2007 6:32PM PDT

Yes. We currently own a Panasonic PT 45-LC12 45" DLP PTV 720p resolution in HD w/outboard ATSC tuner, and you may purchase it from me for a very low price.
Why? because the nasty secret of all PTV (projection tv) is the projector bulbs. These custom items are just high quality, servo output controlled and intensity adjusted lamps. The total cost of manufacture is possibly as much as $15.00 (though I doubt it's even that much), and if you add in the cost to transport, warehouse, and distribute them you could make a 100% profit on them at $50.00 apiece. Do they cost $50 -- Nooooo! Panasonic lists their bulb (the only one you can use) at $450! And even the best price to be found on the Web is about $280.
And with that enormous price do they at least burn for 5,000+ hours in normal service. No they do not, in fact all four of those we have had have failed between 1,000 and 1,500 hours of use. Fortunately we had a 'service agreement' (normally a useless extra cost item which has saved us hundreds of $$ in this one case) and free replacements each year (the first three failed each March like clockwork). Last year the tech also replaced the "ballast" (voltage controller) in case that it was the cause of the short bulb life we were experiencing. So this year the bulb made it all the way into April before it went Pop.
I will not purchase another PTV of any kind until the cost of the projector lamps is brought into the line with sanity. Given all that the Panasonic DLP set produces a very good and detailed picture with little fall off from center to edge, many user-freindly features, two HD input sets, and useable audio. Overall it is very good to excellent in all areas, save the "made only by Panasonic" bulb.
So we are currently shopping for a new LCD based HD TV, probably a Sony Bravia XBR3 in either the 46" or 52" screen size.

I have a 134cm LG DLP HDTV and have had it for 2yrs now and is absolutely fantastic, the only down side that I can comment on is the 30-40sec delay on start-up, but I think all TV's have some delay, right!

Yes: What Type/Brand and so on.
Jun 8, 2007 7:43PM PDT

I am a proud owner of a Samsung 32" LCD Type HD T.V., Now I know it's not the best model ever but it has what I wanted at one great price. I will post a link to my review at the end. From What I have seen My TV is not as easy to find any more but on the plus side I have seen the new model(s) of 32" LCDs from Samsung and they are even better with a greater contrast raito and better refresh rates at just a bit more than what I got mine for about $50.00 more give or take $5.00 they are still a great deal.

HDTV Heat

Yes, I have a Polaroid 32" FXM-3211C. With built in DVD player.
The built-in DVD player is a great feature. I am surprised and dismayed though at how hot the screen gets and the heat it generates almost competes with my AC unit. I did not notice this during the winter months but now summer is here, sometimes I just have to turn it off as it acts like a heater! Is this normal? Mike.
