Point and shoot or DSLR - help

I am willing to upgrade from my old sony steadyshot compact camera. I want something I can be creative with, take good pictures of the kids playing around and landscapes as well. I believe I dont need something as complex as a DSLR (in this case i am afraid i will be paying for something i wont be able to take the most out of it), but would like to have nice pictures, certain creativity tools and zoom. Whats probably the best camera for me? Thanks in advance.
