General discussion

Point and Shoot Digital

My Cannon A60 has seen it's better days and I am seeking a replacement. I have spent this afternoon reading reviews and I am more confused now that before I begun. Seeking a good camera in the $100-$400 price range and I am leaning towards a Cannon S90 or S95.

Appreciate any and all recommendations for general family use.

Canon A60

Your A60 is a 2 megapixel camera with viewfinder and manual controls.

There are very few small cameras available with viewfinder and manual controls.
Canon cut those from newer cameras to reduce cost.

The newer small cameras have a larger LCD but it is still difficult to see the image on the LCD in bright sunlight.

If you want a viewfinder and manual controls on a small camera the Canon S90 and S95 are about your only choice in the Canon family.
Both are excellent choices.

.....

A note about your A60:
If you camera is producing off-color (usually pink) pictures or pictures with lines in them, you need to read this:

http://www.imaging-resource.com/badccds.html

If you have those symptoms, canon will fix the camera for free.

I have read several reviews indicating a low battery life and errors messages appearing on screen. Is this a major problem?

My previous posting should have read: short battery life and lens error. Is this a major problem with the S95?

Battery Life - Lens Error

You need to ask - short battery life as compared to what?

A small camera has a small battery therefore it has a shorter battery life that a larger camera with a larger battery.

Here is a link to a review page that discusses battery life on the S95 (near bottom of page):

http://www.steves-digicams.com/camera-reviews/canon/powershot-s95/steves-conclusion-96.html

If you want to take more than 200 photos in a day, you should buy an extra battery.

Lens Error:

I have not seen any comment about Lens Errors on the S95.
A particular camera can have lens errors if the camera has been dropped.
Was this a particular camera or a statement about all S95 cameras?
